- Second Shooting at Housing Police in a Week

- New York City Housing Authority Indifferent About Public Safety
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- Normandeau Newswire- The shooting of New York City Housing Authority
- Police Officer Barbara Cook at the 10 building, 1379 apartment Martin
- Luther King Houses housing project January 5, 1993 is actually the
- second time in 5 days that shots were taken at Housing Authority
- Police.
-
- During the New Year's festivities someone had shot at a Housing
- Authority Police car at Astoria Houses, home of deposed NYC HA tenant
- leader Violet Hamilton.
-
- Conditions are so bad in some housing projects, that at Queensbridge
- Houses a 24 hour store operates with its burglar gates rolled down
- and padlocked at night. There is a small opening for sales but no way
- to escape in case of fire. It is suspected that the Queensbridge
- Houses cleaners has people working all nite behind its rolled down
- and locked gates. In 1992 the New York City Housing Authority Police
- office at Queensbridge Houses was fire-bombed.
-
- How can anyone forget the shooting of the school principal at Red
- Hook Houses.
-
- Why is there so much violence in public housing?
-
- Tenant leaders say that it because NYC HA bureaucrats know that there
- is little likelihood of tenants making any waves. So there is no need
- to do anything.
-
- Parents of children injured by criminal tenants normally just chalk
- it up as something that happens in housing projects.
-
- In Chicago, UPI reported on January 5, 1993 that a mother of a child
- killed by a sniper is suing the Chicago Housing Authority, accusing
- the CHA of neglect and "utter indifference" to public safety.
-
- How much concern does the New York City Housing Authority show for
- public safety in its housing projects? On December 6, 1992 the
- Queensbridge Tenant Council faxed NYC HA Chairperson Sally
- Hernandez-Pinero to say that a few hours earlier police had arrested
- someone who had been shooting from an apartment window at
- 40-09 Vernon Boulevard and asked;
- "How come we never hear of these people who shoot from the roof
- tops, the windows and the street corners getting evicted?"
- NYC HA Chairperson Sally Hernandez-Pinero never responded.
- Indifference?
