The login you use on the NB will tell it what protocol (PPP or SLIP)

Once you are connected if the NB is set to "auto" mode it will send VJ
compressed packets IF it sees one from the other end.  That is, it watches
the line to see whether it should switch on the compression.

If you turn it "on" then it will initiate calls with this feature enabled.

Somewhat like the "compression" in their Trailblazer modems.  You can enable
"automatic" detection, set it "on", or "off".  If its "on" the other end
must support compression.
