- My dad brought his new PowerBook 160 along with him on his visit
- to MacWorld here in San Francisco. He was using Microsoft Word 5.1a
- when his machine crashed. He was able to restart it, then shut it
- down. A couple of days later he tried to start the machine up again.
- It would 'smile' for a few seconds, then display the '?' icon. He
- tried this a few times, then gave me a call.
-
- My first thought was that either the boot blocks or the system file
- on his 120 meg IBM hard drive were corrupted. I brought along my
- system 7.1 installation floppies, my PowerBook 140, and some small
- hand tools. I thought that the repair would involve booting from
- my floppies, and possibly reinstalling the system. It was worse,
- much worse.
-
- The first thing that I discovered was that my 7.1 floppies would not
- boot on his machine. I got the "you need a newer system" dialog, and
- that was that. What could be newer than 7.1? Well, it turns out that
- there is something newer. Read on...
-
- My next step was to ask my dad if he'd brought along his installation
- floppies. No, they were back in Florida, and he really needed to get
- to stuff on his machine. OK, it was time for radical surgery. I removed
- the 120 HD from his machine, pulled the 80 HD from my PB140, and
- installed his 120 HD in my machine. I then booted from floppy, and
- his machine HD mounted on my desktop. It was easy to see that I'd been
- correct, his system file was corrupted. I ran disk first aid, and then
- tried to repair his system file with ResEdit. No go.
-
- I checked his system carefully, and found that he had a file that I had
- never seen, something called 'System Enabler 111'. By installing a
- new system on his HD, then putting this 'System Enabler 111' into
- his system folder, then reinstalling his HD into his PB160, we got
- him back into business. A couple of questions:
-
- 1. Is there a different installer in the PB160 package?
- 2. By using the 'all macs' option on my installer, did I miss
- something that he needs on his PB160?
- 3. What gives with this 'System Enabler'? Is it now Apple's strategy
- to package one of these with each new flavor of machine?
- 4. Both my dad and I work with lots of different clients who have
- various Macs. It would be nice of Apple:
- A. To document the 'System Enabler' strategy someplace like
- on the developer CD series; and,
- B. Distribute the whole collection of enablers so that folks
- like use can service our clients, most of whom throw away
- or loose or reuse the floppies that come with their machines.
