  14. OK, I saw all these messages about Gateway machines, so I thought I would share
  15. my experience too. I ordered my 486 DX2-66V system on Dec 2, and was promised
  16. delivery in 3 weeks. So I was keeping my fingers crossed hoping it would arrive
  17. before X'mas. I order the standard system but with 16MB ram, the 2MB ATI
  18. UltraPro upgrade, 256K cache and a tower case. (Oh, no monitor, since I opted
  19. for the 17" Taxan MV875+.)

  21. Anyway, I did not receive it by X'mas, so I called Gateway, having a hard time
  22. getting through to their customer support. But left message to ask them call me
  23. back. And they did! Anyway, they told me they are backlogged due to the "holiday
  24. season". So I hope that I would receive my system before New Year. Instead I 
  25. received it on 1/4 (yes, just this Monday!) and they shipped it with Federal
  26. Express, and on the carton, I saw a sticker that specified delivery on Monday.
  27. Not bad. So it took me altogether a little more than 4 weeks to receive my
  28. system.

  30. Now 2 glitches. I asked for the 16MB be shipped with 1 single 16MB SIMM, but
  31. they installed 4 4MB SIMMs instead. Also I checked their documentations, and
  32. they have not shipped the manual/documentation for the Central Point AntiVirus
  33. software, which is part of the "Cool Tools." (To other GW2K owners, did YOU
  34. receive these documentation?)

  36. Overall, I am satisfied (perhaps impressed is a better word) with the machine.
  37. It feels much faster than my SUN Sparc at work (at least my current desktop
  38. station if not our server.)

  40. Since I am completely new to PC, and this is my first PC purchase, I don't have
  41. all those baggage of applications to run into compatibility problems with the
  42. (notorious) ATI driver. At least not yet.

  44. Anyway, looks like it would be fun in the next couple of months trying to
  45. install UNIX  (Linux or 386bsd) and X and set up dual boot correctly. Please
  46. wish me luck :-)
