- OK, I saw all these messages about Gateway machines, so I thought I would share
- my experience too. I ordered my 486 DX2-66V system on Dec 2, and was promised
- delivery in 3 weeks. So I was keeping my fingers crossed hoping it would arrive
- before X'mas. I order the standard system but with 16MB ram, the 2MB ATI
- UltraPro upgrade, 256K cache and a tower case. (Oh, no monitor, since I opted
- for the 17" Taxan MV875+.)
-
- Anyway, I did not receive it by X'mas, so I called Gateway, having a hard time
- getting through to their customer support. But left message to ask them call me
- back. And they did! Anyway, they told me they are backlogged due to the "holiday
- season". So I hope that I would receive my system before New Year. Instead I
- received it on 1/4 (yes, just this Monday!) and they shipped it with Federal
- Express, and on the carton, I saw a sticker that specified delivery on Monday.
- Not bad. So it took me altogether a little more than 4 weeks to receive my
- system.
-
- Now 2 glitches. I asked for the 16MB be shipped with 1 single 16MB SIMM, but
- they installed 4 4MB SIMMs instead. Also I checked their documentations, and
- they have not shipped the manual/documentation for the Central Point AntiVirus
- software, which is part of the "Cool Tools." (To other GW2K owners, did YOU
- receive these documentation?)
-
- Overall, I am satisfied (perhaps impressed is a better word) with the machine.
- It feels much faster than my SUN Sparc at work (at least my current desktop
- station if not our server.)
-
- Since I am completely new to PC, and this is my first PC purchase, I don't have
- all those baggage of applications to run into compatibility problems with the
- (notorious) ATI driver. At least not yet.
-
- Anyway, looks like it would be fun in the next couple of months trying to
- install UNIX (Linux or 386bsd) and X and set up dual boot correctly. Please
- wish me luck :-)
-
- Just sharing my experience. --- John
