- Hi folks,
- I recently discovered ARNS - I have some questions about operation.
-
- My situation is as follows.
-
- 1) Mac IIci at home running System 7.0 + tuneup.
- 2) Mac SL/IP 1.0 from HydenPark.
-
- I installed Network cp 3.0 and Appletalk 58.0 from the Network Installer
- available on ftp.apple.com. (as the documentation suggested getting a
- recent version.) I installed IPRemote as described.
-
- I can successfully connect to a host running the arns daemon. On that same
- wire is a FastPath. (I read about the drawback to MacSLIP 1.0 - and
- dismissing the dialog with the shift key, etc).
-
- It all works - I see all the campus zones and can do AppleShare mounts, set
- and use the printer, etc. etc.
-
- My primary problem is that the Mac crashes a bit often. It seems to crash
- in different applications (as determined by MacsBug) at different times.
- Needless to say it "never" crashes when I'm not running IPRemote.
-
- I've tried pulling out the vast majority of my INIT's but so far it seems
- to still crash. It most likely to crash when a TCP/IP app is open as well.
- The last thing I did last night was make sure that SHeap is loaded as the
- first, that seemed to result in the longest up-time so far (it didn't crash
- before I got tired).
-
- For as long as I tested it Async AppleTalk worked fine, but I'd rather use
- IPRemote if I can use it at the same time I can keep my IP connections.
-
- My questions are:
-
- 1) Has anybody else tried running IPRemote over SL/IP and had it
- work consistently? I'd be interested in hearing "works for me" if that is
- the case.
-
- 2) What, exactly does SHeap do and why would it be required. If I
- need to use this, does it indicate something about my configuration that I
- should change?
-
- Thanks for any help. And thanks to djh for his time and effort on
- these tools.
