- Summary
-
- Can anyone suggest how to patch nntp so it queries the Appletalk network
- for the Mac's Chooser User Name, so that this can be written in the NNTP
- logfile.
-
- Details:
-
- We have a network with many Macs which use what MacTCP calls server
- addressing (and some others call dynamic addressing). In other words,
- the Macs do not have a fixed TCP/IP address, but get one dynamically
- from some gateway.
-
- The NNTP server runs on a Sun.
-
- When the Macs read news using NNTP, the NNTP log file contains the
- TCP/IP address of the user. However, this is no use at all for me to
- try to analyse use of news, because I can't find out who corresponds to
- each TCP/IP address, (and the correspondance may change from time to
- time). Most users don't have acounts on the NNTP server, so I can't
- user the user facility in the nntp log (since it doesn't appear in most
- log entries).
-
- The timeserver for tardis produces a nice log file, just like the one I
- want, but I think that it is given the User Name by the Mac cleint end.
-
- I expect I have to modify the NNTP server to get what I want.
