- Then you've been misinformed. Are you multitasking or running on a slow
- machine? If so, the modem may receive some characters when the computer isn't
- "listening," and they'll be lost, resulting in errors in the transfer. A 16550
- UART will buffer up to 16 bytes, eliminating such a problem.

- It is possible to get by without a 16550, but you just have to be careful.
- During downloads, avoid running anything else, especially disk-intensive
- activities. In fact, if possible, it's best to exit the multitasker entirely
- before performing downloads. (If you're lucky enough, these steps may not be
- necessary.) True, this is probably where you were hoping to multitask the
- most...but you always have the option of getting a 16550.
