  30. The Internet newsgroup, alt.binaries.pictures.erotica, is just a forum for
  31. pornographic images to be exchanged worldwide.
  32.  
  33. Since pornography is demeaning to women, I believe the AarNet and any other
  34. Australian network, should not be subscribing to such rubbish.
  35.  
  36. Recently, images of nude women chained up and tied up have graced the pages of
  37. this 'news'group. This does not, in my opinion, fall within the usage
  38. guidelines of AarNet.
  39.  
  40. There are at least three reasons to remove this newsgroup and any others which
  41. are similarly demeaning to women:
  42.  
  43.     1) The images are pornographic, not 'erotic': consult any of your
  44. female colleagues for their opinions
  45.  
  46.     2) The images are largely _illegally_ scanned-in images from
  47. pornographic magazines (so that there is copyright infringement)
  48.  
  49.     3) The usage of these images is NOT one of the uses of AarNet that our
  50. employers want to be paying for
  51.  
  52. Other reasons to remove the group (and any similar groups):
  53.  
  54.     * the scandal that would be attached to Aarnet and the Internet more
  55. generally if this were to reach the conventional media
  56.  
  57.     * there are better things to spend multi-megabytes of storage space on
  58.  
  59.     * women are badly enough represented on computer networks without
  60. further turning them away with the sexual harassment implicit in the
  61. promulgation of such pornographic images.

  64. If you are not aware of what I am talking about, take a look at the newsgroup.

  66. If you _are_ aware of this newsgroup and agree with me, please write or email
  67. your nearest Aarnet representative expressing your disgust at this 'news'group.
  68.  
  69. If you think that the newsgroup is 'harmless fun': see what your female
  70. colleagues, friends, wives, secretaries think ===== particularly in light of
  71. the fact that your employer is paying for it. Legally, it is a clear case of
  72. sexual harassment.

  82. nb: I am _not_ talking from a moral 'high ground'. I am _not_ a card-carrying
  83. member of the Moral Majority. However, pornography generally is demeaning to
  84. women, and I believe that it is particularly poor in the present context.
