- ] The HP95 also has a built in clock/calendar and can be programmed to
- ] execute functions at specific times. One advantage of the 95 over the
- ] 48 is that it is can accept PCMCIA RAM cards which can be effectively
- ] doubled in capacity using Stacker. If you want to control multiple
- ] devices you can run out of memory fast storing all the commands - at least
- ] on the '48 ir programs I have seen.
- ]
- ] To some this might seem irelevant to the satellite world but I use timed
- ] recordings all the time, specially of audio stuff. My Sierra III will
- ] not come up on an audio subcarrier of a scrambled channel when you use
- ] its built in timers. It always defaults to the scrambled sound channel
- ] even if you are not authorized. So I have to program a sequence from
- ] the remote that, after the sat receiver has come on and is receiving
- ] the right channel goes: tune tune tune tune channel-down (which selects
- ] the audio submenu and then changes to the right subcarrier), then the
- ] remote goes on to send signals to the stereo to start the audio tape
- ] recorder. After an exact delay when the tape is just before the end
- ] it sends a reverse signal to change the direction of recording and
- ] avoids lost recording on the leader. Ain't technology wonderful!
- ]
- ] By the way, using an HP48 or 95 as a timed remote has another advantage
- ] over regular remotes. The remotes I have only support a 7 day clock. So
- ] if you want to make a single recording more than 7 days in the future
- ] while you are away on vacation you are out of luck. Even worse is
- ] when the clocks change and you are away. With a computer you can
- ] program in daylight saving changes.
- ]
- ] For many of us that live in areas where power can glitch from time to
- ] time a battery powered remote control timer is essential. Recently we
- ] went away for several weeks and came back to find a power glitch had
- ] amnesia'd the timers on one VCR so we didn't get any of the programs
- ] it had been set to tape - despite the fact it has a 1 year 8 event
- ] timer - it only remembers stuff if the power is off for less than 5
- ] minutes.

- So, what does a 48 or 95 go for?
-
- Are these items actually learning remotes?
-
- About how many keys can be stored in them?
