  13. Dave's post really makes a good point.  We should show
  14. compassion for people who are killed and injured by 
  15. trains, no matter how foolish their actions, and for
  16. their relatives as well.  I think much of the indignation
  17. was sparked by the fact that the mother of the boys
  18. is suing the railroad for millions, and will probably
  19. win, despite the fact that the young men were on 
  20. private (and posted) property.  Let's not forget her
  21. misery, even if we disagree with her lawsuit.

  23. This reminds me of a phrase I heard frequently when I
  24. was in the Coast Guard:  "Dumb Civilians".  It is easy
  25. for any of us who are part of a special group, be it
  26. professional lifesavers, railroaders, or trainfans, to
  27. get into an us vs them mentality.  This sort of attitude
  28. blocks rational thinking and can lead to all sorts of
  29. prejudices and misunderstandings.  We are all foolish
  30. or ignorant in our own ways; its part of the human 
  31. condition.
