  18. The same happened to Dylan when he first went electric.  The wild and
  19. free generation were no less culturally structured than their elders, it
  20. would seem, and maybe even less forgiving.

  22. Three references occur to me regarding Laura Nyro, and all of them
  23. involve Dylan, in some way.  Once was when she was very young, very new,
  24. and terribly shy.  Dylan wanted to meet her at one of those loft parties
  25. in New Yawk.  She spent the interview, it was reported, in nervous
  26. giggles.

  28. The last only I would relate to Nyro.  Paul Simon on the old Cavett show
  29. was rummaging through his list of songwriters for us, and he prefaced a
  30. criticism of Dylan with the obligatory paen to his genius and then
  31. related his reaction to a new tune, a new album, and the same, tired old
  32. three-chord harmonic structure.  (Simon didn't mention Nyro, or any
  33. other female artist; and that's another sad habit from those days...)

  35. Even when music is supposed to be innovative it can settle into a
  36. predictable chiming quarter.  Dizzy Gillespie said in liner notes once
  37. you have to create a rhythm for every tune so they don't all sound
  38. alike.  That's what I recall about the early Nyro from years ago;  she
  39. did not just graft her personal history onto ancient vines, but created
  40. a new seed altogether.  Eli was outrageous in its time (and perhaps
  41. later...).
