- Re the inquiry about Alison Brown...She's best known as a banjo player
- (bluegrass style) although she's a fine guitarist also. She has two
- CDs on Vanguard, "Simple Pleasures" (Vanguard 79459, from 1990) and
- "Twilight Motel" (Vanguard 79465, from 1992). Both are all-instrumental
- except for Maura O'Connell singing "Sweet Thames Flow Softly" on the
- second album. The music tends to be either fairly straightforward
- bluegrass style or David Grisman-like "new acoustic music." In fact,
- Grisman produced the first album and plays on it. Alison also spent
- some time as the banjo player in Alison Krauss' bluegrass band Union
- Station (and Krauss plays on the "Simple Pleasures" CD). Both albums
- are pretty good -- very well played, certainly. Personally I get a
- little tired of "new acoustic music" (I like the bluegrassier numbers
- that break up the albums) but I doenjoy both of these. All of the
- music is original except for "Sweet Thames" (a Ewan MacColl song).
- Overall I'd say that you'd like these records if you like Grisman-type
- stuff or other somewhat jazzy acoustic music. If you're a hard-core
- bluegrass fan, these might be a little further out than you prefer,
- although they're much closer to straight bluegrass than, say, Bela
- Fleck and the Flecktones.
- Alison has a BA from Harvard in American history and literature,
- played with the Boston-area band Northern Lights, got an MBA in
- finance and marketing from UCLA, became an investment banker for 2
- years, then was asked to join Alison Krauss' band when they lost their
- banjo player. (She also plays on Krauss' album "I've Got That Old
- Feeling" on Rounder.) She gave up banking when the Krauss gig
- worked out so well.
