- Oops, sorry, I guess I'm a little late for that.

- This is/was getting to be a Frequently Asked Question on this newly-
- created newsgroup, so a couple of months ago (just after the split),
- I started putting together a guide of sorts. It's missing a lot, and
- there are probably inaccuracies, but this is the sort of guide that
- I suspect people who ask this FAQ would like to see. Can anyone
- help me by contributing short descriptions of the rides/trails/parks
- that I haven't had a chance to go on?
-
- I've restricted distribution of this message to "ba" (although I know
- that that restriction doesn't really mean much), because Bay Area riders
- are more likely to be able to contribute descriptions. Once it's more
- complete, I plan to request that the guide be put onto the rec.bicycles.ftp
- archives.
-
- So far, I just list one ride per park or trailhead.
-
- Here is a list of the Bay Area parks where I've heard of MTB trails,
- but for which I do not yet have ride descriptions (most of them
- are because I haven't had a chance to ride there yet):
-
- AlamedaCreek ECdMOSP PtReyes Tilden
- Annadel GGNRA RedwoodOakland WestCliff
- Bolinas HenryCoe SamTaylor Wildcat
- Briones JoeGrant SawyerCamp
- CoyoteCreek KennedyRd Sugarloaf
- Diablo MissionPeak Tamalpais
-
- (These are my filenames for the places; most are obvious, but
- maybe not these: GGNRA == "Golden Gate National Recreation Area"
- and ECdMOSP == "El Corte de Madera Open Space Preserve".)
-
- Following is a list of ones I've started a description for, but
- the description and/or the distances/times need to be refined:
-
- AlumRock CoyoteHills LakeChabot Purisima
- Arastradero FOOSP LosGatosCreek SaratogaGap
- BigBasin HenryCowell Montebello UCSC
-
- Finally, here's a list of the ones I have written:
-
- FallCreek(CLOSED) MTVShoreline SoquelDemo
- GrizzlyFlat NiseneMarks WilderRanch
-
- Please send me a note if you are interested in contributing, even if
- it takes awhile before you have time to write your contribution.
-
- Thanks in advance ...

-
- Introduction
- This is a list of Mountain Bike rides in and around the greater San
- Francisco Bay Area. I split up the lands around bay into three
- regional categories: the North Bay, the East Bay, and the Santa Cruz
- Mountains; a fourth category, Flat Rides, lists some of the longer
- (mostly paved) bike-trails and flatter rides, most of them pretty
- close to the bay.
-
- Explanation of the Ratings:
- I like to rate these rides on a set of three 1-10 scales.
- Some are very subjective; some are dependent on your skill,
- experience level, and overall fitness.
-
- Overall: (very subjective: How much do you like this ride?
- Here, consider things not otherwise rated, like beauty,
- crowdedness, convenience, danger (to you or to your
- bike), as well as the T/E ratings below.
- 1 == feh ... 10 == Wowie!)
-
- Technical: (1==flat wide dirt (or even paved) road; 10==steep and
- scary singletrack, much technical skill needed to
- stay on the bike; sort of an average is desired here
- if the ride has a lot of variety)
-
- Effort: (How much effort is needed for this ride? Sort of a
- combination of how steep and how long is this ride?
- E.g., a long but flat ride and a shorter but steep
- one might both get high E ratings.
- 1==easy ... 10==lots of effort required)
-
- Other factors that affect how much you like the ride should
- be listed in the ride description; these could include some
- of the things mentioned above that affected your Overall rating,
- or could give details on what led to the T or E rating. Examples:
-
- - Beauty of surroundings (e.g., "This ride stays in
- under the Redwoods most of the way, except for a
- couple of wonderful views of Monterey Bay.")
-
- - Dangers to bike & body (e.g., "Watch out for bears!",
- or "Very rocky -- could well damage your bike.")
-
- - Crowdedness, Convenience, Exposure (in either the
- climber's or the rescue-worker's sense),
-
- - Breakdown of the T or E rating (e.g., "T is only 4
- because about 75% of the ride is dirt road. But the
- other 25% is some very interesting singletrack. Novices
- may have to dismount in spots.")

- Name: Alum Rock County Park
- "OTE" Ratings: O5/T4/E3
- Distance: ~7 miles?
- Time: 30-45 minutes
-
- Description:
- A reasonably nice city park, good viewspot at the top. Mostly dirt
- road, with some short sections of technical downhill singletrack.
-
- Directions to the start:
- Find I680; take Berryessa (east) or Capitol Ave. (south) exit.
- (From Berryessa, turn right onto Capitol.) Then left onto
- Penitencia, to its end at a chained gate with a dirt parking lot.
-
- Directions to do the ride itself:
- There's a big "Alum Rock County Park" sign up on the cliff;
- enter the park to its right, up the trail next to some rough
- wooden steps. Follow the trail on up to the "Youth Science
- Institute", then go left onto paved road, and up and up to
- Eagle Rock (elev. 795'). Take mostly right turns on the way
- down, and then a left. << These directions need help >>.

-
- Description:
- NONE YET, except for this tip:
- (This ride isn't really complete without a stop afterwards, at

-
- Directions to the start:
- From I580 in San Leandro, exit at Fairmont Drive. Take an immediate
- left as you come off the exit, then take an immediate right onto
- Fairmont Drive. Fairmont merges with Lake Chabot Road; there is a
- sign for the marina on your left. You can avoid the fee if you park
- out on Lake Chabot Rd across from the marina, or pay and park inside.
-
- Directions to do the ride itself:
- Meander around the lake on the paved East Shore trail. Climb
- Macgregor George trail. Up & down the "Ten Hills" (aka "Ten Sisters")
- trail. Out & down Redwood Road, past the Willow Park Golf Course (or
- stop here for refills). Major climb up Brandon trail, along the East
- Bay Skyline National Recreation Trail (a segment of the [not-yet-
- complete] Bay Area Ridge Trail). A swooping series of downhills
- followed by a few more climbs bring the Lake back into view, then get
- onto the paved West Shore Trail (a heavily multi-use trail, requiring
- judicious reduction in speed) to return to the marina and the end of
- the ride.

- Rides in the Santa Cruz Mountains
- ----- -- --- ----- ---- ---------
-
- I consider this area to include the entire SF Peninsula; from what I can
- tell, the richest parts for MTB trails are (1) along Skyline (highway 35)
- between highway 9 and 92, and (2) near Santa Cruz.
-
- Along Skyline, which goes along the ridge of the Peninsula here, there are
- several Open Space Preserves. Each has some trails, and a reasonable map
- of each preserve is usually available at its parking areas. But they're
- all separate maps, and tend not to show you very well what other OSP's or
- County Parks are reachable by trail from there. For that purpose, the
- Krebs maps (mentioned in the Resources section) are what you really need.
-
- A work-in-progress in this area is the "Bay Area Ridge Trail" (also
- mentioned in the "Resources" section). Eventually, this trail is intended
- to be a 400-mile long trail going all the way around the SF Bay. (I don't
- believe that the whole thing will allow Mountain Bikes, but much of the SF
- Peninsula section will.)

-
- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
-
- Name: Arastradero Preserve
- "OTE" Ratings: O5/T6/E4
- Distance: 6 to 8 miles
- Time: ~1 hour
-
- Description:
- Open grasslands, some thorn plants, decent bay views. A lake.
-
- I've seen a surprising amount of wildlife here, considering how close
- it is to civilization: deer, owl, tarantula, hawks, some weird little
- black mole/vole creatures, and 1 guy fishing in the lake, with one of
- those weird floating wader-things on (like waders but with an inner-
- tube built in around chest-height).
-
- Directions to the start:
- I280 to Page Mill, towards the hills on Page Mill, turn right off Page
- Mill onto Arastradero Road (it's marked as Arastradero Refuge Road on
- some older maps); there's a parking lot on the right side, a half mile
- north of Page Mill.
-
- Description/Directions to do the ride itself:
- <VERY SKETCHY -- needs work>
- Go in, turn right on the big road, up almost to the house, left on the
- singletrack, around the top of the hill, onto road, down around the
- back side of the house, (short singletrack detour on left side of
- road) turn right at the tree. Real nice singletrack to bottom, right,
- back onto road, cross other trail, right at bottom, then left to go
- around the lake, up the paved part, left onto more singletrack, back
- down to dirt road near entrance.
-

-
- Name: Big Basin Redwoods State Park
- "OTE" Ratings: O7/T2/E5
- Distance: ?unk
- Time: ?unk
-
- Description:
- Actually, there are several possible rides here. Most are only on
- fire roads. Can be long. High "O" rating is because of the beauty of
- the redwood forests.
-
- Directions to the start:
- Highway 9 to highway 236, to Big Basin Headquarters.
-
- Directions to do the ride itself:
- Gazos Creek Road, out to out there, then up Olmo Fire road, and loop.
- (See the Krebs map for a variant of this ride.) Or Last Chance Road
- out to 1 (except that much of it is private), and take 1 over to Gazos
- Creek. Or ... [I (or someone) should refine these descriptions ]

-
- Directions to the start:

- Name: Fall Creek is CLOSED
- "OTE" Ratings: O0/T0/E0
- Distance: N/A
- Time: N/A
-
- Description:
- The "Fall Creek" section of Henry Cowell State Park is mentioned
- here only to let you know that Mountain Bike riding is no longer
- allowed anywhere in this park. It was closed in 1989 or 1990. So
- any of you who've ridden there in the past, be advised that it is
- no longer allowed. :-(
-
- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
-
- Name: Fremont Older O.S.P./Stevens Creek County Park
- "OTE" Ratings: O7/T6/E5
- Distance: ?unk
- Time: ?unk
-
- Description:
- Open grasslands and chaparral -- can be quite hot in the summer.
- Some challenging singletrack, and some steep hills to climb.
-
- Directions to the start:
- Take Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road (De Anza) or Bubb Road to Prospect.
- Turn west and take Prospect to its end (it makes a left turn at
- one point).
-
- Description/Directions to do the ride itself:
- Go up the (paved) hill, turn right onto the trail. Left at the top of
- the trail (Point A), to continue up to the ridge. Turn left and do
- some ups-and-downs (but mostly ups) along the ridge to pass by the top
- of Look Out Trail. Down to the entrance of Garrod Stables, left onto
- some singletrack. (You can either go left onto the singletrack inside
- the stables, or do a hairpin left to avoid going into the stables.)
- Eventually, these singletracks get you back to Point A (obviously,
- more detail is needed here); go straightish out towards the Bay in
- order to take the Seven Springs loop (a nice downhill singletrack, and
- a very steep climb back (unless you climb back up the singletrack)).
-
- An alternate entrance to this pair of parks (steeper, starts lower) is
- just below Stevens Creek Dam, off Stevens Canyon Road. There's a MTB
- playground area somewhere down there, but it may be off limits. (I'm
- not sure.)
-
- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
-
- Name: Grizzly Flat/Long Ridge
- "OTE" Ratings: O8/T6/E4
- Distance: ?unk
- Time: 1 hour
-
- Description:
- Mostly singletrack, in & out of the oak and madrone forest, a
- creek crossing, a dam, a pond, turtles, a Zen retreat. Some
- great views to the west are possible, looking down towards the
- Pescadero area.
-
- Several longer, more strenuous rides are also possible starting here;
- the trail down to the northeast goes into Upper Stevens Creek County
- Park, which has trail connections to Monte Bello O.S.P. -- you can
- get out to Page Mill Road near Alpine, or down Stevens Canyon Road.
-
- Directions to the start:
- On Skyline southwest of Saratoga, about 4 miles northwest of
- highway 9. (From Saratoga, go up 9 to 35, turn right.)
-
- Directions to do the ride itself:
- Go down to the southwest -- away from the bay. At the bottom, you
- cross a creek (see the "Saratoga Gap" ride). Turn left after the
- crossing, take the trail/road until you find a small dam & pond (look
- for turtles here), cross the dam and ride up the switchbacking
- single-track, to get up to a dirt road. Turn right onto the road,
- take it to its end where a sign points you onto Peter's Creek trail.
- Take that for some nice downhill with 2 or 3 tricky switchbacks, to a
- junction/clearing. Go straight across, then up, along, and then some
- steep downhill to return to the previously-mentioned creek crossing.
- Cross and go back up to the turnout.
-

- Name: Henry Cowell State Park
- "OTE" Ratings: O8/T6/E7
- Distance: ?8 miles
- Time: 1.5 hours
-
- Description:
- All in the redwoods. Partly paved, partly dirt road. No
- single track. Fun anyway. Some steep downhill, a challenging
- river crossing.
-
- Directions to the start:
- Find Felton. Go south on highway 9.
-
- Directions to do the ride itself:
- Pipeline road, up to Rincon Trail, on up to junction with
- Rincon Road. Down the road to the river. Cross, up to
- the Rincon Parking area. Return on 9. (Some people return
- along the railroad tracks, but there is a tunnel with a
- "NO TRESPASSING" sign on it.)

- Directions to the start:
- (Near the Southwest corner of Cupertino): Take Foothill Expressway

-
- Directions to do the ride itself:
- Just climb up Montebello Road (paved), forever, then onto the dirt
- for more climbing up to Black Mountain, then some hairy dirt road
- downhill back down to the end of Stevens Cyn Rd. [I've never yet
- done this one, so perhaps someone who has could refine these
- directions a bit, and add a description. :-) ]
-
- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
-
- Name: The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park
- "OTE" Ratings: O8/T6/E8
- Distance: 10-25 miles
- Time: 2-5 hours
-
- Description:
- Starts with some fun singletrack, then a long climb (2300' gain) on
- moderately boring but pretty dirt road. This ride stays in the
- forest (mostly Redwoods, mixed with Madrone, Tanbark Oak, and
- Douglas Fir) almost all of the way, except for a couple of
- wonderful views of Monterey Bay. An option at the top (see the
- "Soquel Demonstration Forest" writeup) has some challenging and
- rocky but very fun (O8/T9/E6) singletrack.
-
- Directions to the start:
- Take Highway 1 to Aptos, 5 miles east of Santa Cruz. (Some people
- think of this as being "south" of Santa Cruz.) Take the Seacliff
- exit, go north toward the mountains, and turn right at the first
- light, onto Soquel Drive. After about 200 yards, turn left at the
- light onto Aptos Rancho Road, a short dead-end street. Park along the
- street there; the trail starts at the end of the street. [Note: this
- is not the "main entrance" into the park, which puts you onto dirt
- road right away, and avoids some of the fun singletrack at the
- start.]
-
- Directions to do the ride itself:
- At the end of Aptos Rancho Road, go down a steep, rutted trail, then
- some rolling singletrack, a creek crossing (Aptos Creek), and up
- the other side until you get to a T -- go left. There are many
- opportunities along here to turn right and go up to the road
- (that would be the main road into the Park -- Aptos Creek Road);
- however, you can stay on singletrack just about all the way to
- "the steel bridge" -- at some point, you must go up to the road,
- turn left onto it, and (sometime soon) cross the steel bridge.
-
- An option here is a 90 degree left turn -- its exact location is hard
- to specify, but it leads to a crossing back over the creek, and some
- real nice forest singletrack. Some confusing trails head off to the
- left up the hill, but the correct one leads eventually back to the
- creek, crosses it again, and goes on up to the steel bridge.
-
- Past the bridge, you stay on the road, pass the uppermost car-parking
- area, pass a gate, and go on up "the Incline" (600' of climbing in 1/3
- of a mile), then a mellower climb, up to "Sand Point Overlook" (1600'
- elevation). Here, you have 3 choices ... turn around and go home, go
- down Hinkley Ridge trail, or go on up to Santa Rosalia Mountain.
-
- Hinkley takes you down a fun dirt road (watch out for the water bars
- across the road!), past 3 or 4 stream crossings (Soquel Creek), out to
- Olive Springs Road (turn left onto it). From here you have either a
- fairly flat, 6-mile road ride to return to your car (take Olive
- Springs down to Soquel- San Jose Road, turn left onto it, and then
- turn left at the light at Soquel Drive), or you could go back up
- Hinkley road.
-
- In case you go on up from Sand Point Overlook: some people call the
- road above Sand Point Overlook "The Ladder" or "The Steps" -- it gets
- steep, then flatter, then steep, and so on. At 2.4 miles above Sand
- Point, look for the short singletrack on the right. It goes out about
- 150', to a spot with a wonderful view of Monterey Bay & Salinas
- Valley. There's a couple of welcome downhills just before the top; at
- the top ("Santa Rosalia Mountain Overlook" -- 2500' elevation) there
- is another nice view out over the Monterey Bay.
-
- At the top, you're near the northern edge of Nisene Marks Park; it
- adjoins the "Soquel Demonstration Forest" here. There are several
- options for how to proceed from here (see the Soquel Demonstration
- Forest writeup). Usually, I just feel like heading back down the
- hill.
-
- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
-
- Name: Soquel Demonstration Forest
- "OTE" Ratings: O8/T9/E7
- Distance: 12-24 miles
- Time: 2-5 hours
-
- Description:
- Two loop rides can be started here; you can wait until the middle of
- the ride to make the decision about which one to take. Starts out by
- climbing up the paved road, then climbing up some sandy/dusty dirt
- road, then some technical singletrack down into the SDF, with a
- decision at the bottom.
-
- Directions to the start:
- Take Highway 17 to Patchen Pass ("The Summit") and go southeast on
- Summit Drive. (That's a right turn if you're coming from Santa Cruz,
- else it's a weird crossing over 17.) Go 10 miles as Summit becomes
- Highland Way, and does a sort of right-then-left jog at Mt Bache Road
- and Spanish Ranch Road, to a parking spot with a small but bright
- green "Soquel Demonstration State Forest" sign. [This parking area is
- a bit over a half mile after you cross over a big landslide, on a
- temporary-looking dirt road.]
-
- Directions to do the ride itself:
- Ride on up Highland (still southeast), turn right onto Buzzard Lagoon
- (Ormsby Road goes the other direction here), then right onto Santa
- Rosalia Mountain Rd (no sign -- it's a spot where Buzzard Lagoon
- continues straight and down, while you make a sharp right and go
- further up). Up for a while, then a little down and more up, you come
- to a gate, then some more up, and down to the S.R. Overlook. Here,
- take the singletrack down into Soquel Forest. One right turn is hard
- to find -- it's a "Y" just below the Corral Trail turnoff.
-
- I recommend avoiding the upper end of Corral Trail. Take Sulphur
- Springs Road down past the stinky springs to its end at Corral Trail
- (Road); turn left (down) onto the road.
-
- At the bottom, it dead-ends onto Soquel Forest Road; here, to choose
- the shorter ride, turn right, and take Soquel Forest Road back to the
- parking spot. To choose the longer ride, turn left. (The rest of
- this description would follow the Krebs map's route, down SFR, up
- Amaya Creek Road, Comstock Mill, Stetson, S-SJ, back to Highland.
- Get a Krebs map for the details.)

- Directions to the start:
- Southwest of Saratoga -- on highway 9, at the summit where
- it crosses Skyline (highway 35). Park in the lot at the
- eastern corner of that junction.
-
- Directions to do the ride itself:
- Cross highway 9, onto the singletrack. Take that singletrack for
- miles; it parallels 35, and eventually crosses it. Go on along the
- road (Long Ridge Road), back onto singletrack, and then finally onto
- Peter's Creek trail for some nice downhill with 2 or 3 tricky
- switchbacks, to a junction/clearing. Straight across, then up then
- steep down to a creek. [For a longer option, you could cross the
- creek and climb out to 35 at Grizzly Flat, from which you can go on
- down into Stevens Canyon. Good luck getting back. :-) ] Instead, turn
- rightish and go along the trail/road, up to a small dam and pond (look

- single-track, to get back up to Long Ridge Road. Turn left onto it,
- to head back to Saratoga Gap.

- Name: UC Santa Cruz (Upper Campus)
- "OTE" Ratings: O6/T2/E3
- Distance: ?unk
- Time: ?unk
-
- Description:
- Mostly gentle climbs, mostly within the forest.
- A good beginners' ride.
-
- Directions to the start:
- Park by the firehouse up near the top of campus.
-
- Directions to do the ride itself:
- Ride up Chinquapin to its end at Empire Grade. Take singletrack to
- the right, up to a gate. It's private property past that gate. When
- you return to the end of Chinquapin (at Empire Grade), instead of
- turning left to go down Chinquapin, you can go straight on past
- Chinquapin, onto a short singletrack loop that returns to Chinquapin
- a bit further down.
-
- For a more strenuous ride, there are several ways to ride from
- Chinquapin down into (or almost into) Felton. One possibility: about
- a mile above the firehouse on Chinquapin, find a large downed tree
- east of the road. The singletrack trail starting here is a hairy,
- steep, sometimes rocky, fun ride that takes you down to the Rincon
- parking area on Highway 9. Then go up Highway 9, onto Toll House
- Gulch and Upper Scenic Drive (a hairy climb) and back to Chinquapin.
-
- It may soon be legal (the city of Santa Cruz is currently (late 1992)
- working on making some decisions) to ride from that Rincon spot up
- through the Pogonip instead, for a more pleasant return to the UCSC
- firehouse.

-
- Name: Wilder Ranch State Park
- "OTE" Ratings: O7/T6/E6
- Distance: ?12 miles
- Time: 2 hours
-
- Description:
- The terrain consists mostly of open benchlands above (north of) the
- farms along the beach. Ocean & city views, some wildlife (hawks,
- herons, deer, rabbits, bobcat, coyote). Climbing is moderate (highest
- elevation ~ 800'). Many trails, a reasonable amount of nice and
- challenging forested singletrack with several creek crossings, some
- dry, some wet. Best on a cool day or a day with high overcast, but
- clear underneath. Bring binoculars. In season, you can often find
- fresh berries to eat along the way.
-
- Directions to the start:
- The park is on the south side of highway 1 (which is an east-west
- road here), about 1.5 miles west of Santa Cruz. There is a very
- large turnout just east of the park entrance; parking there can
- save you the $6 park entrance fee.
-
- Directions to do the ride itself:
- Several route possibilities exist in the park; here's one of my
- favorites: From the turnout, go west along highway 1 to the park
- entrance. Turn left and go up into the park, past their entrance
- kiosk, down and left into the ranch house area. Go on through
- that area (if the park is staffed, you can get a poor topo map from
- their bookstore), and through a tunnel under highway 1.
-
- A couple of minutes later, make the sharp left turn to start heading
- up the hill. (The Krebs map calls this "Wilder Ridge Trail".) This
- takes you up a short steep part, then some rolling/flat land, and then
- another short but even steeper part, to a junction with "Twin Oaks
- Trail". Go left to stay on Wilder Ridge Trail. A little more steep
- climbing gets you to a great viewspot, with views of beaches, farms,
- much of Santa Cruz, and around the Monterey Bay.
-
- Above the viewpoint, there is some more flat/rolling riding, and then
- Wilder Ridge Trail ends on a graveled road that slopes down to the
- right. (Here, a right turn would take you down to the "Old Corral"
- area.) Turn left instead, and look for the second singletrack on the
- right [yeah, I know, more precision is needed here] -- one of the tops
- of the "Enchanted Loop". Go down to Baldwin Creek, upstream along it,
- and climb out to the Old Corral.
-
- Turn left onto the dirt road, and take it on up to the Eucalyptus
- Grove at the top of the big meadow. Watch carefully as go descend the
- east side of that meadow -- there's a singletrack loop off to the
- left, that goes down into Upper Peasley Gulch. Once back on the road,
- you can continue down it, to where it becomes singletrack with some
- challenging creek crossings (all dry last time I was here), and heads
- back toward the Old Corral. Just before you get to the Old Corral,
- you can take Bobcat Trail (this one even has a sign) to Twin Oaks
- Trail, which returns you down to the main trail, just below the "great
- viewspot".

- Name: Mtn. View Shoreline/Palo Alto Baylands
- "OTE" Ratings: O5/T2/E1
- Distance: 10 miles
- Time: 1 hour
-
- Description:
- It's mostly flat, and mostly dirt-road-width riding, but there are
- some pretty fun (though short) sections of single-track and a few very
- short but sorta steep hills. When I ride here, I take about an
- hour-long circuitous route that goes from Sun out near the
- Amphitheatre, and then (eventually) out to Palo Alto Baylands park --
- there is a little unofficial MTB playground where you can do little
- ups & downs and jumps. Egrets and avocets (and too many seagulls) are
- pretty commonly seen here; we also see herons, hawks, rabbits, and
- white pelicans. Suicidal squirrels are a problem.
-
- Directions to the start:
- Take 101 to San Antonio Road, in Mountain View. Take the
- northbound exit, go to the north end of San Antonio. Turn
- right onto Terminal Blvd, and park anywhere along it; the
- far (east) end is preferable.
-
- Directions to do the ride itself:
- The first half of this ride is a tricky one to give directions for.
- On a map, the route I take would look sorta like a big figure 8. I
- loop through the east half of MTV Shoreline Park sorta clockwise, and
- then (also clockwise) loop around the big marsh (which means, take the
- paved bike trail to Palo Alto (Embarcadero Road), take two rights to
- go in through Byxbee Park, then out along the Baylands trails to catch
- the consistent tailwind back to the starting point).
-
- Write me for more exact (but still possible insufficient) detail; to
- write the description of this route took me nearly as much time as it
- takes to ride it (>100 lines of text).
