- While running a New Years Day race up Mt. San Bruno, just south of San
- Francisco, I rediscovered the magnificent panorama available from the
- top of that ridge. (See my article in rec.bicycles.racing for an
- account of the race.) I recommend hiking or biking to the top of that
- mountain to enjoy the view.
-
- While waiting for the race stragglers I noted that the following views,
- among others, are available from this hilltop:
- the Farallone Islands about 30 miles out in the Pacific,
- Point Reyes to the North, separated from the rest of the mainland by
- a notch where the San Andreas Fault goes through,
- the Golden Gate,ok+'67b
- the towers of San Francisco, which used to be called "Baghdad-by-the-
- Bay" before that name acquired negative connotations,
- Mt. Tamalpais, the birthplace of mountain biking,
- Angel Island (the Ellis Island of the West),
- Alcatraz with its dingy prison buildings still intact,
- Five bridges crossing the Bay,
- Mt. Diablo towering over Berkeley and Oakland,
- Mt. Hamilton with ancient Lick Observatory on top, now mostly
- useless because of the lights and air pollution emanating from the
- Bay Area.
- Mt. Umunhum, Loma Prieta (home of the '89 earthquake) and the Santa
- Cruz Mountains to the south.
-
- There are trails up the sides of Mt. San Bruno from all directions,
- but I'm not sure whether they are open to bicycles. There is one
- paved road, not open to public cars, that leads to some microwave
- towers at the West end of the ridge. That road comes out of a park on
- the North side of the mountain, off Guadalupe Parkway.
-
- Try it, you'll like it!
