  19. Time for a carbureator quiz.   It's time that I select
  20.  
  21.      the perfect carb for my car, and I have at my disposal
  22.  
  23.      several candidates that I am considering for the
  24.  
  25.      purpose.  I own all of them, and for me it's simply a
  26.  
  27.      matter of just rebuilding the carb, and selecting the
  28.  
  29.           intake manifold.

  33. I have a holly 4160, a rochester quadrajet, the stock
  34.  
  35.      motocraft 4bbl, and my current favorite, a carter
  36.  
  37.      thermoquad which I just cannibalized from a 1976
  38.  
  39.           Plymouth Gran Fury state police car.

  43. My car is a 5000+ pound 1970 Mercury Marauder with a
  44.  
  45.      429 CJ engine, 383:1 rear end, C6 Trans with a shift
  46.  
  47.      kit installed, and lots of looks and style.  My desire
  48.  
  49.      is to make this thing a compromise:  excellent mileage
  50.  
  51.      for a beast of its size, while simultaneously able to
  52.  
  53.      lay 100ft patches of rubber and do the 1/4 mile in
  54.  
  55.           under 14 sec.

  59. Just to let you know, I have been considering the
  60.  
  61.      offenhauser 360 as an intake, and the cam/lifter set
  62.  
  63.      has yet to be chosen;  I am however leaning towards a
  64.  
  65.      cam that is 2-3 steps above the OEM.   Compression is
  66.  
  67.      11.00:1, and the ignition is all electronic (mallory)
  68.  
  69.      with a peak-limiter, although I doubt seriously that
  70.  
  71.           I'll ever push it to that extreme.

  75. The heads are currently being ported and polished

  77.      (although there isn't alot more that can be removed
  78.  
  79.      from the CJ heads from what I am told), and a local
  80.  
  81.           company is putting together the

  83. dual exhaust package with 2.00 inch (I think he said)

  85.           pipe through a pair of turbo muffs.

  89. All in all, its a pretty respectable package, needing

  91.      lots of final assembly.  So, what carb will be best,

  93.           huh guys?

  97. I lean toward the Carter Thermoquad for one reason.

  99.      The primaries are small - about 1" diameter -  (same

  101.      size as the stock motocraft and the rochester), while
  102.  
  103.      the secondaries are in excess of 2.00" diameter - have

  105.      yet to measure exact - (twice the size off all the
  106.  
  107.      carbs mentioned)!    I figure the small primaries will
  108.  
  109.      give me the economy I am looking for, while the large
  110.  
  111.      secondary bores will propel this detroit dinosaur at
  112.  
  113.           warp 9!

  121. Also, does anyone know of an aftermarket manufacturer

  123.      of spread-bore intakes for the 429 CJ?   I am not sure
