  22. "Electronic Publishing:  Origination, Dissemination and Design"
  23. ("EP-odd") is pleased to announce a special issue on the topic of
  24. Active Documents, planned to appear in 1993.
  25.  
  26. The presentation and contents of an active document is dependent on
  27. computation.  An active document can be intended for interactive
  28. presentation or for paper presentation.  A paper-based active document's
  29. content might be generated by execution of an algorithm when the
  30. document is assembled.  The organization of an interactive active
  31. document might depend on characteristics of the computer environment in
  32. which it is displayed.  In either case, the key characteristics are that
  33. the document has been designed by an author with a particular purpose in
  34. mind and that the document's content and/or structure responds to
  35. aspects of the surrounding world's state.
  36.  
  37. We are interested in papers on all aspects of active documents.  As a
  38. very general starting point, some possible topics include system design,
  39. underlying support issues, evaluation, language issues (especially the
  40. representation of the activity within the system), and cognitive issues.

  42. As a rough guideline, papers should be in the range of 10 to 20 pages in
  43. length, although longer and shorter papers are appropriate if dictated
  44. by the subject matter.  All papers will be refereed using the normal
  45. EP-odd refereeing process.  Manuscripts must be submitted in final form
  46. as the limited time available for reviewing the contributions to the
  47. special issue will not permit very many passes through the editing
  48. cycle.  Authors will be asked to follow the EP-odd author guidelines,
  49. (four copies of the manuscript are requested), and they are asked to
  50. include a copy of the EP-odd copyright release form with their
  51. submission. Copies of the guidelines and copyright release form may be
  52. found in each issue of EP-odd or may be obtained by mail from the guest
  53. editor (address below).

  55. Because space is limited in the special issue, it may not be possible to
  56. publish all deserving papers.  Unless authors request otherwise, such
  57. deserving papers will be referred to the normal EP-odd editorial process
  58. and will be considered for publication in a subsequent issue.
