- I have a IIx that I have had on its side for about 3 years. No problems,
- bombs, etc. I think its important that you format the drive in the
- orientation that you will be using it.
-
- I have seen problems with the drive being formatted in a horizontal
- position and then the user decides to turn it on its side and then it
- experiences system bombs and then one day decided not to boot. I had this
- one in the shop for repair and I had it on the bench horizontally and it
- booted right up. I ran diagnostics and it passed all the tests and then
- the user came and picked it up and I got a call 15 min. later saying that
- it wasn't starting up again. I made a field service call and sure enough,
- it was on its side. We layed it horizontal and it started up fine. I told
- them to back it up and reformat and it has been working fine ever since (on
- its side).
-
- I spoke to an Apple Engineer about this about a year ago. He said that you
- may experience problems with older hard drive mechanisms because they
- weren't designed to be running while vertical. He said that it may
- experience read/write problems. When I called, I was asking him about my
- Mac IIx, he said that it probably would run cooler because of the tower
- effect by placing it on its side. It could more easily vent the heat
- because the vents are on the sides.
