- I used to teach Truth Tables in a Geometry course in a high school
- class. My approach was to somehow get the students to understand that the
- IF part of an implication guarantees the THEN part. The second thing
- that we were seeking was the truth. We are not interested in falsehoods.
-
- I would use this example.
- If it rains today then the ground will get wet.
- p then q
- Raining today guarantees wet ground.
-
- If it rains and the ground is actually wet , I have told the truth
- true then true
- If it rains today and the ground is not wet , I have not told the truth.
- true then false
- If it does not rain today and either the ground is wet or not wet
- matters not. My original assertion has not been contradicted, I have not
- lied. I have told the truth.
- false then true or false
