- RIGHTS AND THE RAINBOW
-
- The New York City Board of Education has now reinstated an
- avowedly anti-gay local school board in Queens. This is a
- concession to anti-gay zealot Cardinal John O'Connor, and--most
- important--to the reactionary ruling-class forces seeking to
- promote divisions among the working class and oppressed groups in
- New York.
-
- The only appropriate response is to redouble the effort to build
- a strong, united, broad-based struggle to demand an end to
- heterosexist education. Children who live in heterosexual
- families should be taught that lesbian and gay families exist and
- must be respected. Children of lesbian or gay parents should see
- their families recognized and valued. And youngsters coming to
- terms with their own lesbian or gay identity should receive
- support and encouragement in their struggle to come out of the
- closet.
-
- At the same time, the racist right wing must not be allowed to
- derail the whole move toward a multicultural curriculum. A
- gay-positive approach is just one aspect. The "rainbow
- curriculum" is basically geared toward providing a
- non-Eurocentric, non-racist education to New York's
- schoolchildren, most of whom are Third World.
-
- When chief Queens bigot Mary Cummins spews her brazenly anti-gay
- rant, she and her backers are really opposing the entire
- curriculum. A coalition of all the oppressed communities is the
- best way to stymie this attempt to set groups against each other.
