- LOS ANGELES COPS MOVE AGAINST SOUTH CENTRAL YOUTHS
-
- By Joyce Chediac
-
- Anger hit the streets of South Central Los Angeles on Dec. 14 in
- response to a police assault on demonstrators.
-
- According to an Associated Press report, protesters assembled at
- the intersection of Florence and Normandie avenues in the South
- Central section, where last spring's rebellion began.
-
- Community activists distributed leaflets protesting the high bail
- set for four men arrested and charged in the beating of truck
- driver Reginald Denny in the early hours of the uprising. These
- men are currently awaiting trial.
-
- As the demonstration was winding down police in riot gear
- apparently attacked. They arrested 60 people. Most were booked
- for "investigation of failure to disperse."
-
- More than 250 cops, fully riot-equipped, were sent into the South
- Central. Enraged community members responded by throwing rocks
- and bottles at police cars and breaking windows at a service
- station.
