- DEMONSTRATION TO PROTEST U.S. OCCUPATION OF SOMALIA
-
- MONDAY, DEC 21st 5:00 P.M.
- HERALD SQUARE, NEW YORK CITY
-
- A demonstration will be held Monday, December 21st at 5 pm at
- Herald Square 34th & 6th Ave to protest the U.S. military
- occupation of Somalia by thirty thousand soldiers. The organizers
- contend that a massive relief effort was and is possible without
- militarily taking over the entire country.
-
- "After a year of doing nothing, while hundreds of thousands of
- Somali people starved, the Bush administration suddenly decided to
- militarily occupy Somalia- not so much to feed starving children
- but to dominate the Horn of Africa and turn it into a another
- strategic military base in the oil-rich Middle East." states
- Monica Moorehead, a spokesperson for the I.A.C.
-
- "We would do well to remember the U.S. government, including the
- Pentagon and C.I.A. have supported the most racist and reactionary
- regimes in Africa, from the apartheid regime in South Africa, to
- Mubutu in Zaire, to Savimbi in Angola." states Moorehead.
-
- Moorehead also said that the Pentagon is staging this high-
- profile operation to "showcase Pentagon capabilities" in order to
- resist growing demands that the "bloated 300 billion dollar annual
- budget not be significantlly reduced in the post-cold war era."
-
- "Ironically, Moorehead continues, the initial result of the U.S.
- military occupation has been to shut down relief operations by
- telling all relief workers to stay indoors for 48 hours, gravely
- affecting hundreds of thousands of hungry people, according to the
- N.Y. Times. Also, the house to house searches and the disarming of
- people who've not been proven to be hostile is pure colonialism."
-
- Moorehead also said that instead of spending billions on military
- occupation" the people of Somalia and all of Africa deserve
- reparations from western countries that got rich from centuries of
- colonialism, plunder and enslavement."
