- :> What is lacking ?
-
- :The ability to stick a floppy in a brand new computer, turn it on, and
- :have it come up running UNIX.
-
- SCO ODT 2.0 is almost that simple. Stick in a floppy, stick in
- a tape, answer a few questions about system name, set root
- passsword, wait for tape to finish loading. Of course if you
- know what you're doing, you can go off on tangents to optimize.
-
- :Ah, but UNIX does more than DOS. OK, let's go up to the next level: OS/2
- :or Windows or MacOS:
-
- :The ability to install the system on a hard disk without knowing anything
- :about computers not listed in the manual, reboot, and come up with a friendly
- :windowing environment.
-
- :> I am tired of listenning to this.
- :> The success of DOS is simple:
- :> cheap price
- :> Only alternative
- :> Pushed by IBM at a time IBM was god.
-
- :There are other personal computer operating systems that have been more
- :successful in terms of systems sold than UNIX. Yes, they're cheap. Yes,
- :that's a definite requirement. The other two aren't.
-
- :> As a proof, windows and windows NT. Windows 3.1 is crashing
- :> and crashing and crashing and selling and selling and selling.
-
- :Windows 3.1 can be installed and run by a naive user.
-
- Not if you want anything other than a minimal PC without any
- additional hardware or software. Windoze 3.1 doesn't even have
- all the documentation necessary to set it up. You have to buy
- additional manuals from Microsloth or others to explain what you
- really need to do to make it work! I had loadhigh fail any time
- a UNIX partition existed on the hard disk until I replaced emm386
- with qemm.
-
- :> Make UNIXWARE $150 and you will see a different story.
-
- :Not unless several years worth of veneer are stripped off. Otherwise, why
- :are people still buying Macs?
-
- Why did people buy IBM PCs in the first place. H.L. Mencken said
- something to the effect that no one ever went broke
- underestimating the intellingence or taste of the American
- people.
