- We will soon be receiving a 486/33 ISA system with System 5r4
- ethernet card, 1.2G HD, X-windows, and other goodies on board.
- (hopefully monday) and I would be interested in suggestions on security
- holes to plug, packages worth installing (I will be adding a few programs-
- C-news,trn,xrn,Elm, and all the compression programs I can find)
- and whether I should plan to repartition the drive.
-
- The PromoX UNIX S5R4 Complete Unlimited set with X11R5 includes all
- the usual development tools, along with system administration utilities.
- The majority of my experience is as a user of numerous Unix and unix-like
- systems. We do not intend to have many login users, the primary access will
- be through a BBS system.
-
- I assume that the system will be shipped with the drive configured
- as one large filesystem. I am pondering whether it would be better to
- partition it into several smaller areas.
-
- For example, the system I am currently posting from has several
- smaller drives. These are seperated into root,usr,usr0,spool,News,dumps
- var and tmp. Is this a good idea? What amount of space should I plan on
- giving to each area?
-
-
- The system will be shipped with the OS installed, and the
- installation files will be included on a 6250 tape (we have no tape drive)
- We can backup the full installed OS over the network, but if we try to
- repartition would we have to reinstall the OS? how could we accomplish this
- if we have no other machines running this particular strain of Unix?
-
-
- Lastly, I was wondering if anybody can reccomend a good X-windows
- terminal "emulator" that can run on an IBM 386/16sx over a slip connection.
- I have heard bad things about Desqview/X in general, and do not know of any
- programs that "simply" emulate a X-windows terminal.
