- Subject: [*] CarolStack.sit.hqx
-
- Here is the traditional Christmas submission of the frivolous Carol Stack.
- This stack has 13 songs and 17 sounds. It also has all the needed externals
- so that it works right. I have added a button for recording a new sound
- directly into the stack too.
-
- This is low on interface and art, but high on obnoxious fun possibilities.
- My personal favorite is Silent Night played with the Power Chord guitar
- sound. Annoy your neighbors!
-
- This spawned the much more pleasant Christmas Carol stack that Murph
- uploaded.

- Subject: [*] Investment Tracker 1.0
-
- This is the bug-fixed version of Investment Tracker and should replace the
- original submission archived as /info-mac/card/investment-tracker-10.hqx.
-
- "Investment Tracker" is a HyperCard 2.1 Stack that can be used to track
- investments in stocks, mutual funds, or anything else that issues shares for
- which a price quote is available. The information for each investment is
- stored on a single card of the stack which contains the buttons for entering
- and manipulating data and calculating various interesting things about the
- investment. It is particularly valuable for tracking investments in which you
- are making periodic investments (Dollar Cost Averaging, Dividend Reinvestment
- Plans) or withdraws.
-
- -- Features --
- - Records date and dollar amount of transaction and price per share for
- purchases, dividends or sales (partial or total). These records can be
- displayed and edited at any time.
-
- - Calculates total shares held in each stock or mutual fund.
-
- - Calculates total dollar amount invested in each stock or mutual fund.
-
- - Calculates total worth of each stock or mutual fund.
-
- - Calculates tax basis of each stock or mutual fund taking into account
- dividends reinvested and partial sales.
-
- - Calculates average price paid for each stock or mutual fund.
-
- - Calculates (by iteration) the average annual yield for each stock or
- mutual fund.
-
- --System Requirements--
- HyperCard 2.1. This stack was written under System 7 on my new Classic II.
- I see no reason it won't work on any machine that is running HyperCard 2.1
- or the new HyperCard Player.
-
- --Shareware--
- A US$5 registration fee is requested.
-
- Compacted and BinHexed using Compact Pro 1.33.

- Subject: [*] risk-ii.hqx
-
- Dear Moderator,
-
- This is a repost of a recent submission of the file Risk_II.sit.hqx.
- Please submit this into your info-mac/game directory this last time.
- This is a colorized version (modified using ResEdit) of the old
- black/white Risk! This makes excellent use of the 256-color
- mode of any color Macintosh with a color display. This has been
- corrected of a minor flaw where the OK button in the victory
- dialog window did not work. It now works. The color background
- was modified slightly for better display on black/white Macs, as
- well as the Risk! card backface. This game still works on the old
- black/white Macs, since the modifications are only resources, that
- is, the actual game code is still original and unchanged in this
- colorized version. Therefore, this is not an unauthorized "hack".
- It should be noted that though this game does not explicitly
- announce anywhere within itself whether or not it is either share-
- ware or freeware, one can assume freeware since it has been
- available for downloading on ftp sites for quite some time now.
- Hence all credit (c) rightfully belongs to the author of the game:
-
- Antonie J. Engel
- 60 Pinewood Rd.
- Bolton, MA 01740
-
- Since this game now works for both black/white and color Macs,
- it is certainly worth it to download. Enjoy!
-
-
- A note to the moderators: I had a friend submit this game
- on her own account about 4 days ago in the process of
- showing her how to find the submissions addresses of
- some of the sites, and how to submit the files for archiving,
- but this time I am just doing it myself, so as not to involve
- her a second time.

- How does the 'star trek' after dark module (the one at sumex...) work?
- I put it in the after dark folder but it does not show up in the
- menu....
-
- If you mean /info-mac/art/star-trek-pics.hqx, it's not a module in itself,
- it's a set of pictures for the PICS player module.
-
- If you mean /info-mac/util/ad/star-trek.hqx, it's not a module in
- itself, it's a picture for the Picture Frame module and settings for
- MultiModule. Put the STAR TREK file into the MultiModule Settings
- folder, and put the c. StarTrek file anywhere convenient. (The Slide
- Show Folder is a good place.) Choose the c. StarTrek file in the
- Picture Frame module, then choose the STAR TREK settings in
- MultiModule.
-
- This package would certainly benefit from a Read Me!
-
- BTW, why are After Dark modules archived under "util"? AD itself is a
- Control Panel, and the modules (some of them, anyway) are art.

- I just got a HDI30 SCSI Adaptor today for my PB160. So I tried to

- PB160 <-> HDI30 <-> SCSI cable <-> 44 Removable

-
- I checked the SCSI ids, there are no conflicts. Has anyone

-
- When I daisy chain my PB160 and 44 Removable to my old SE, my PB160

-
- If you _really_ don't care about color and if most of your work will be word
- processing, then you don't need a PowerBook 180 or even 160 -- a
- black-and-white 145 will do. If you want gray scale, then a 160 is nice
- (I have one, and I love it) and only a few hundred $$ more than the 145.
- The only advantages of the 180 over the 160 are the FPU (which you wouldn't
- use for word processing) and the nicer, much more expensive screen.
- Remember, you can buy a 160 and a 13" color monitor to plug it into for less
- than the price of a 180. And with a 160, you won't go through the agony of
- stuck pixels.
-
- I don't know how PowerBooks could be produced in a new, smaller package,
- and still retain space for a full-size keyboard, a 640 x 400 screen, a
- hard drive, and a floppy drive.
-
- I doubt very much that PowerBook prices will come down anytime soon since
- they're in extremely short supply. I would advise that you buy today --
- it might take until next February to get a PowerBook even if you order now.

- From: Charlie Stross <charless@sco.COM>
- Subject: DeskWriter v. StyleWriter (review)
-
- I run a DeskWriter at home. I do quite a bit of serious work, but
- not _quite_ enough to justify a laser. Before I bought my
- printer, I compared the features and running costs of the HP product
- and Apple's offering. What I found was this:
-
- Speed:
-
- No contest, the DeskWriter is faster. It prints at
- 2-4 ppm, compared to the 0.5-2 ppm of the StyleWriter.
- If you never print anything longer than 20 pages, this
- is probably not an issue for you. If you want to run
- an office, go figure.
-
- Size:
-
- StyleWriter wins by a mile. The DeskWriter is not
- suited to life on the road, and if you need portability,
- you need the StyleWriter.
-
- Quality:
-
- Depends on what kind of ink and paper you use. All
- ink-jet printers tend to bleed slightly when printing
- onto absorbent paper; ideally you need a shiny surface
- that will minimize capilliary flow. If you use blotting
- paper, expect blots. This, rather than the number of
- DPI the printer is rated at, seems to be the limiting
- factor on print quality; there's not a lot to choose
- between 360 dpi and 300 dpi if the paper blurs the dots
- together. Blurring is more pronounced in high-res modes
- for both printers; ordinary photocopier paper actually
- looks _worse_ when printed in high-quality mode, because
- the print contains enough ink to bleed badly.
-
- You might prefer a StyleWriter if you're going to do
- very fine graphics and use very high quality paper.
- Otherwise, the difference is virtually impossible to
- detect.
-
- Duty cycle:
-
- DeskWriter wins, hands-down. Both printers are basically
- re-engineered versions of other print engines; the
- DeskWriter is a modified Deskjet series engine, while
- the StyleWriter is a modified Canon Bubblejet. (Yes, you can
- use BJ10 cartridges in a StyleWriter and Deskjet cartridges
- in a DeskWriter.) The BJ10 engine was designed for lightweight
- portable printers; I've seen the duty cycle for the
- StyleWriter quoted at anything from 3000 to 6000 pages
- before the printer is dead of old age. The DeskWriter,
- on the other hand, is good for at least 60,000 pages. My
- personal print cycle can hit 2000 pages/month of text;
- I'd kill a StyleWriter in six months, but the DeskWriter
- is good for years.
-
- Consumables:
-
- For draft output, both printers run fine on copier paper;
- for correspondence it's necessary to use something better.
- Before getting an inkjet printer, check your paper costs
- and try to find a cheap source of good stuff.
-
- Print cartridges are usuriously expensive in this country
- (the UK); up to $30 (US) for 250 pages in top quality, or
- 500 pages draft. Both machines are equal in this
- department. The commercial reinking kits are something of
- a rip-off. I use a DeskWriter for my Mac and a BJ10ex
- for my PC, and re-ink both; the DeskWriter runs on neat
- fountain pen ink, while the BJ10ex runs on 75% pen ink
- mixed with 25% isopropyl alcohol. In both cases, the
- cartridges tend to become streaky after about 2-5
- refills, but as cartridges are the biggest single running
- expense I would estimate that re-inking brings the cost of
- maintaining either of these machines down to the level of a
- dot-matrix. Otherwise, if you replace cartridges whenever
- they run dry, the running costs are approximately twice as
- high as for a laser (!)
-
- Drivers:
-
- The HP print monitor is broadly equivalent to the Apple
- Print Monitor in function. Installing the DW driver isn't
- exactly difficult, and the machine will happily print
- TrueType fonts if you want it to. (The StyleWriter
- installation is rendered almost invisible by being part
- of the System 7 setup, if you get your printer at the
- same time as your Mac.)
-
- The HP printer can (I believe: I haven't tried this) be
- configured as an AppleTalk network printer, while the
- StyleWriter has no obvious option for this.
-
- Noise:
-
- With my hearing, I can't tell the difference. The
- DeskWriter is probably a bit louder, but after years
- of putting up with dot-matrix printers (and then
- daisy-wheels and lasers with floor-shaking propensities)
- both of them are like heaven on earth.
-
- Conclusion:
-
- For light home use with mixed graphics and text or
- some personal correspondence, or for use on the move,
- I'd recommend a StyleWriter. For serious home use --
- writing novels -- or for medium-duty business use,
- I'd go for the DeskWriter. In either case pay close
- attention to your paper quality and to re-inking those
- print cartridges; otherwise, when you see how much it's
- costing you, you'll wish you'd sprung the extra for a
- laser printer.
-
- ( Disclaimer: I have no connection with either Apple or
- Hewlett-Packard, other than as a satisfied customer. SCO
- isn't in the Mac business ;-)

-
- I've been a Mac user for only about 6 months and reading info-mac
- digest for just about as long. I don't believe anyone has asked the following
- question, so here goes...
-
- Under System 7, sometimes when I try to copy a file from the hard disk
- to a floppy I get the message "There is not enough room on the disc ... to
- copy ..., unless you empty the Trash. Do you want to empty the Trash now?"
-
- We'll, as if I had a choice! So I dutifully empty said waste
- receptacle
- and copy my file.
-
- Would someone like to 'waste' some bandwidth and explain why copying a
- file is sometimes dependent on the contents of the Trash? It's not that I
- mind
- cleaning out the bin--I can usually reclaim something with Norton--but why
- shoul
- should I have to in the first place?

- History was made today. IBM's stock price dropped to below its book
- value of 55 today, to close at 51 points per share on news that Big
- Blue would be shedding another 25,000 workers and cutting their
- dividend. On the very same day, Apple Computer stock closed at 55
- points per share, 4 points higher than that of Big Blue.
-
- When the Apple Macintosh was first introduced, IBM derided this computer
- as "a toy" claiming that mice were too difficult for users to comprehend
- and use. They laughed at the little toaster of a machine: "The business
- world will never accept it." "No one could use this for any serious
- commercial development."
-
- But who's laughing now? IBM is on the skids and scrambling to stay
- alive. Apple Computer is experiencing record sales and revenues

-
- Innovation and attention to the customer in the form of ergonomic design
- and well engineered products are what distinguish Apple's computers from
- the utter crap being churned out by IBM and the PC clone manufacturers.

- noticed over the last few weeks or so an increasing tendency for the hard
- drive
- [only 20 Mb :-( ] to sound like a B747 when starting up... (well, maybe a
- piper
- cub, but it's still noisy). The noise starts about 10 seconds after waking
- from
- sleep or upon startup and lasts anywhere from 10 minutes to 20 minutes...
- then,
- if the machine is left on, it quiets down for the remainder of its time on.
- It
- did this only once in 10 startups at first, but in the last few weeks that has
- gotten to be nearly every time.
-
- So far, no performance difficulties, so I haven't had any reason to exercise
- the

-
- With all the past issues with "stiction" in certain Apple-relabeled drives,
- I'm
- wondering if this noise is cause for concern. A harbinger of failure to
- come?
- I haven't heard such sounds from any of the other 20 or so machines I've

-
- First thing, when doing the patch. I have a IIci, ROM revision #124.
- However,
- the ROV# resource, well, I only had one, which was 1660. So, i changed that
- one anyway. I then went and ran Speedometer with the old copy of 7.1 still
- going (sans patch), and recorded my results. I then ran speedometer after
- restarting with the new patched system. Well, lo and behold...My results were
- THE SAME! Wow. I figured I had messed up the patch and wasn't getting any
- results. But wait...
-
- I went and picked up the Speedometer report that was put together and posting
- in the archives. The sets of numbers I was getting for the math functions
- were very close to those performed with the test IIci and 7.0.1! The 7.1
- results in the report were slower.
-

- Subject: Quadra 950 on Ethernet
-
- Are many of you using a Quadra as an Appleshare server on Ethernet?
-
- I posted some of this information a month or so ago - and promised an update
- >From your responses. Here is a summary of what has happened, though no one
- >From the net, Apple, or Computerland has been able to explain or solve this
- problem.
-
- I have tried using a Quadra 950, but have had a number of problems. We were
- using the latest of eveything (7.0.1, 57.0.4, AS 3.0, Tuneup 1.1.1 etc.) The
- problem is that the Quadra could barely transmit data on ethernet. It could
- receive a 2 meg file in about 23 seconds, but it took it 10 minutes to
- transmit
- the same file!
-
- Well, I figured something must be wrong. I reformatted and reinstalled the
- hard drive, reloaded all the network software, etc. Tested for a while,
- problem came back though I had a period where I thought everything worked.
- This is closed/locked test environment, no users running around mucking with
- the system, users were defined on the server, but the passwords were changed
- (for my testing purposes) so no one could have logged on accidentally. I have
- reproduced the problem several times. So has computerland - at their site!
-
- We figured it must be hardware, so we swapped out the logic board three times,
- the hard drive 4 times, memory was changed once, tranciever was changed 4
- times. (I'm testing on a 10BaseT net, I believe computerland is using a
- thinnet).
-
- Figured it was the network, or network connection - had a professional come in
- with sniffer to check out our network - everything checks out perfectly.
- (Also, a Mac IICI with Sonic Systems nubus board does NOT have the problem
- transmitting when hooked up to the same node).
-
- Figured there must be a problem with Appleshare on a Q950. Apple TCE says
- probably not, they walked me through memory allocation, cache settings, etc.
- Everything is fine. They will escalate it. I've not heard back since, in
- spite of weekly followup calls.
-
- OK - I must have installed the software wrong, or have bad diskettes.
- Computerland loaded the software at their site, from their diskettes. Problem
- reoccurs after an hour or so of use EVERYTIME.
-
- I have corresponded with a few users in other parts of the country who have
- similar problems, with and without Appleshare. I was beginning to think that
- all Quadra's have a problem, but Apple says that everything works fine at
- their
- site, I have heard from Wade Williams that their Quadra worked OK on
- ethernet.
- (But I don't know if he had a chance to benchmark it's performance. The
- Quadra
- will 'work' if you don't mind mind a slowdown of 20:1 transmitting across the
- network. That is unacceptable for a file server).
-
- What is left for me to try? Maybe there was a run of bad logic boards at the
- factory? Or maybe some ROMS are bad? (but wouldn't roms be replaced when the
- logic board is replaced?)
-
- I have no answer, Computerland has no answer, Apple TCE can give no answer,
- and
- Apple Service can give no answer. I would greatly appreciate any input you
- can
- give me (lurkers included). I really would like to understand WHAT the
- problem
- is with the Quadra/Appleshare, even if I have to switch to NFS or Novell
- running on an Intel platform.
-
- I will greatly appreciate any information that anyone can give me, and I'll be
- happy to summarize information I receive.
-
- I can be reached via compuserve, or Applelink. My Applelink ID is
- HAUPT.J.R@@AppleLink.Apple.COM.
-
- Thanks - Jim Haupt
-
- PS - There is a new version of Appleshare 3.01 that is supposedly shipping,
- TCE
- says that won't make any difference, nor will using the 1.3 network installer
- that comes with appletalk 58.0.

- The DW 3.1 drivers come with HP PrintMonitor, which allows background
- printing. Note that background printing is actually SLOWER than foreground,
- but it does allow you to do other things in the interim.

-
- Just to add to the confusion, or hopefully clear things up...
-
- The StyleWriter _is_ slower than the DeskWriter, but not as much as most
- people claim.
- The StyleWriter has 360dpi, DeskWriter 300dpi.
- The StyleWriter is SMALLER.
- The DeskWriter has a nicer paper tray (vs. the SW's sheet feeder).
- The StyleWriter is less expensive than the DeskWriter.
- Both can use TrueType fonts (no real performance difference here, except
- for the normal disparity).
-
- Remember, however, if onscreen DISPLAY time of TrueType fonts is an issue
- and disk space is not as critical, INSTALL THE BITMAPS! The nice thing
- about TrueType is that it defers to bitmaps for SCREEN display at any point
- sizes present on the system, and generates the display for any sizes not
- installed. TrueType is always used for printing when it's there.
-
- Anyway, I bought the StyleWriter 'cause I got a good deal on it. I was
- able to play with both printers for a while, and decided that the slower
- speed of the StyleWriter could easily be attributable to the extra
- calculations (or composition) for the higher resolution. If speed's a
- concern, though, DON'T USE BACKGROUND PRINTING on the SW under Sys7. If
- you can sacrifice that feature, there's no real speed problem as the SW
- prints about 1ppm (or so, please don't quote me here) with the TuneUp
- driver (on my SE).
-
- I upgraded from an ImageWriterII. No complaints.

- Subject: Sys 7 Printing!!!
-
- I hope this is not a FAQ. We have recently converted a few of our
- "able" machines to Sys 7.0. This has caused some problems printing
- because we have other machines on the same network running Sys 6.x.
- They can both print but they must load their respective printer drivers
- into the LaserPrinter before they can print. This disables printing for
- every machine that is not the same system type.
- Is it possible to use the same printer with Mac's that are running
- different versions of the OS? We have a 3Com network and they recently
- supplied us with the software needed for Sys7 to work with it but,
- again, the printing is the only problem we are having. Any help would

- From: "Stan Kerr" <stankerr@uiuc.edu>
- Subject: The Logitech 3-button mouse for the Mac
-
- This is a short review of the Logitech 3-button mouse for the Macintosh. I
- recently ordered it to evaluate its performance with MacX, and this review
- helps fulfill that goal.
-
- The mouse is produced in right-handed and left-handed versions; the button
- surface is slanted towards the little finger to make it more comfortable. I
- got the right-handed version. The mouse tail has a standard Apple Desktop
- Bus (ADB) connector; the connector permits another ADB plug to be
- piggy-backed onto it, so you can (as I do) still have the old mouse
- connected (and it still works).
-
- (Logitech also makes a trackball version of the mouse, called the Trackman.)
-
- The mouse driver software is called MouseKey, and is placed in the System
- Folder. Under System 7, it goes in the Control Panels subfolder. I am using
- MouseKey version 1.1. (My system is a Mac IIcx running System 7.0.1 with
- Tuneup 1.1.1.)
-
- After the driver is installed and the system rebooted, the default behavior
- of the mouse keys is:
-
- left button : simple click
- middle button: double click
- right button : command-w
-
- This means that pressing and releasing the middle button is the same as
- issuing a double click with the old mouse, and pressing and releasing the
- right button is the same as typing command-w (which is commonly used to
- close windows in Mac applications). This default behavior works nicely in
- Eudora; I can point at a mail item and click the middle button to open it
- and read it, then click the right button to close it when done.
-
- The mouse keys can be reprogrammed with the MouseKey control panel; this
- can be brought up from the Control Panels folder (or the Control Panel DA
- in System 6), or through a special key sequence (default is
- shift-option-return). Each key can be programmed to be equivalent to a
- keystroke, or a keystroke combined with modifier keys, e.g.
- shift-control-option-e, plus a few extra special options (double click,
- triple click, click hold). This is the limit of programming, and the
- greatest defect of the current driver software. When you press a mouse key,
- its keyboard equivalent is entered; if you happen to have other keys
- depressed at the time you press the mouse key, they are ignored. This
- severely limits what you can do with the mouse keys, compared to what you
- can imagine doing with them. (For instance, it would be nice if
- double-clicking a mouse key could have an action different from
- single-clicking it, or it would be useful if pressing a mouse key could
- cause a menu item to be selected, etc.; the combinations go far beyond the
- simple click-this or click-that which they presently allow.) Some of this
- defect, but not all of it, can be alleviated through macro packages such as
- QuicKeys (which I use) or Tempo II (for example, with QuicKeys you can
- program a key combination to perform a complex action, then use the
- MouseKey control panel to program that key combination onto a mouse key).
-
- In particular, with MacX, you can program the middle and right buttons to
- behave correctly, EXCEPT in those situations where you need to use the META
- key in combination with a mouse key. Some X applications require a modifier
- key to be depressed at the same time a mouse key is depressed. For example,
- in an xterm terminal window, it is common that depressing
- META-middle-button causes a menu of special xterm options to appear. With
- MacX, META is usually the Control key, so this implies having to depress
- the Control key and simultaneously depress the middle mouse button; the
- Logitech mouse, however, ignores the Control key, so you're stuck; you have
- to use the MacX keyboard method, which is to depress
- option-control-left-arrow. Not knowing the technology underlying the mouse,
- I make the optimistic assumption that this defect can be corrected with a
- better mouse driver, and that perhaps Logitech will produce one. For now,
- however, the Logitech mouse can not be made into a fully functional X
- Windows mouse.
-
- One other feature that is nice is that the mouse keys can be differently
- programmed for different applications. The MouseKey control panel has a
- menu of application names, to which you can add applications at will; when
- the control panel is activated from within an application, that application
- is highlighted and its mouse key mappings are shown. Simply clicking on a
- different name in the application menu allows you to reprogram the mouse
- keys for any application at any time.

-
- I have a persistent keyboard problem that I think might be related to
- QuicKeys, but I want to check first with other QuicKeys users.
-
- I'm using QuicKeys 2.1.2a. In at least two applications (Eudora and
- tn3270) the keyboard periodically sticks: it suddenly stops responding
- to keystrokes. I can unstick it easily by jiggling a cursor key; it
- responds, e.g., to a left-arrow key, so if I hit left-arrow and right-arrow
- in succession, I can then continue typing. (Any keystrokes I entered
- after it stuck are lost.) If I turn QuicKeys off, it
- doesn't happen. It happens infrequently enough and unpredictably enough
- that simple experiments with my extensions are not very practical.
- Has anyone else seen this behavior?
