-
- The Colorado 250MB drive only actually stores 124 Million bytes (120MB) on
- a tape. The 250MB comes from on-the-fly compression when backing up a
- hard drive, with an optimistic 2-1 compression ratio(I have never got this,
- it is usually around 1.6-1 or less). If you are going to use the drive
- for mass storage of pre-compressed data(gifs, zips etc) like I do, then
- you will only get 120MB out of it. So, if you 210MB hard drive is full, you
- would likely need two tapes to back it up.
-
- As far as reliability/compatibility goes, the CMS stuff is hard to beat.
- Their new software is excellent, throughput is acceptable, and it is very
- easy to use. Also, the 2120 tapes (used by the CMS 250 and 120) are
- available at Office Depot for $19.99 each, in lots of one. Thats a very
- good price (Sony and 3M).

-
- QIC-80 is the format the CMS and almost ALL other backup units use, any good
- drive should read it. (I have successfully read my tapes on two other
- manufacturers tape drives that were QIC-80 compatible).
-
- Just go with the Colorado 250, you'll love it (5 of my friends and I all
- have one, no one has had ANY problems or complaints.)
