  12. I had a Maxtor 7120 120MB IDE drive in an old AT, using an IDE controller
  13. with a BIOS since the AT didn't have user-configurable drive types.
  14. I upgraded to a 386SX/16 motherboard from a Gateway 2000 machine with
  15. an AMI BIOS from 1989.  When the system powers on, the floppies and
  16. hard drive all get reset, the hard drive is accessed for just a second,
  17. then I get the message:

  20. Press <F1> to continue

  22. The system will then boot from the floppy fine, and then I can switch
  23. to C: and run everything as normal.  I thought the BIOS on the IDE card
  24. was the problem, so I tried a normal IDE card without BIOS, with the
  25. same results.  I thought maybe the BIOS wouldn't work with IDE, but it
  26. turns out the previous owner of the motherboard was using IDE.  Using
  27. Norton's diskedit the boot records and partition tables all look fine.
  28. Using Norton's calibrate the preliminary tests say there is a HDD
  29. controller malfunction and it should be replaced, yet both controllers
  30. work okay with other motherboards.

  32. Does anyone have any ideas on what else to try?  The board is made by
  33. FTK; maybe only certain IDE controllers work with it (seems doubtful)?
  34. Any magic CMOS parameters that might help (NEAT chipset)?
