- Not a bad price, considering it's a NEC, which tend to be priced
- higher than other clones. I think the latest verison of the PowerMates
- use local bus video, but I don't think it's VESA VL-bus and it's not
- accelerated. That means you'll get good very basic Windows performance,
- but it's not as fast as you'll want for serious graphics work in a year
- or two.
-
- As far as the monitor, I can vouch for the 3FGx. It's a very good 15"
- monitor - small dot pitch - flat square CRT - good resolution up to
- 1024x768 @ 60hz. There are a few better 15" monitors on the market
- with features like digital mode memory, AccuColor, higher refresh
- rates, etc., but for the price, the 3FGx is a very good choice. You
- might want to consider also getting the optional screen filter from NEC,
- as there is a tendency for that screen to reflect direct lighting in
- the room.

- If number crunching speed is paramount, you should look at a 486DX2/66
- instead of the 486/33. In pure numeric applications, the DX2/66 has a
- 50-70% speed advantage over the DX/33. You can get a 486DX2/66 system
- with the same amount of memory and size of hardisk of the NEC for about $3000
- from many different vendors. For about $500 more than you're planning
- on spending, you can get a system with a DX2/66 and an accelerated
- graphics card. That makes the system faster today, and more expandable
- tommorrow.
