Well, that isn't too bad a price for what your getting. I would recommend upgrading to the
2.1 operating system, it is sooooo much nicer than 1.2. (Don't bother with 1.3 ROM,
it only adds the abiltity to boot from HD, and RAM disks). There
is no real advantage in getting an A600 over this since it is functionally
the same beast (except it has a built-in IDE port and PCIMIA port).
If you want to expand the sucker, it there are hundreds of Add-ons
for it (Hard drives, memory, accellerators etc.).
If you wish to do development, you may want to invest in a hard
drive and possibly an accelerator. Two floppy drives are painful for a
C compiler. More RAM would also be a good move.
An A1200 will cost you more, (399 pounds without Hard Drive for the computer alone), but it is a faster machine, is easier and cheaper to expand memory and Hard Drive. Plus it also has the new generation of graphics chips in it. (These are MUCH better and FASTER than the ones in the A500!).
Another disadvantage of getting the A1200, is that you will have to spend big bucks to get a suitable monitor for it (it requires a multi-scan to make use of all graphics modes).
So, it depends upon what you want for the future. The A500 will still be a good machine for a few years, but gradually more software will be expecting the new chipset (AGA) only found on the newer machines. If you can afford to shell out about twice as much, I think you will be much happier with a brand new A1200.
