- Hi everyone! I don't usually read alt.irc, but I heard something relevant was
- going on, so I wanted to check out the action :)
-
- This thread was started by someone saying that I had annoyed a user and then
- /killed him. This is true to the extent that I had a conversation with the
- user in question about him annoying some other user... I wasn't "annoying" him.
- I am also not in the habit of /killing people without a reason. Or /killing
- them in the first place, for that matter.
- If you have any more questions about this, you can feel free to email me at
- the listed address.
-
- As far as the C/N lines for patriot on charon are concerned, I can inform
- all of you that the first thing I did when I saw the L-line on charon was
- that I changed the link password. I will change it back as soon as the
- L-line has been removed. Until then, MIT will have two separate,
- unconnected servers. I realize this was not the purpose of entering it in
- the first place, but really, how do you expect me to act differently?
-
- Patriot has never in normal operation linked off charon, and
- it is not my intention to ever have it do so. The few times I did it, I had users
- complain almost immediately with phrases such as "What the hell happened? My
- ping times just went through the roof." On the other hand, I have tried to
- keep charon linked off patriot for most of the past few weeks, and this has
- usually worked quite well.
-
- Last year, I was a lowly "luser" of irc here at MIT, and it made me very
- annoyed that the best we could do with the computer resources available here
- was irc.mit.edu for our irc server. It still seems a little strange that
- charon is what we have, when it has to be one of the slowest workstations
- on campus. Hell, any one of the new Athena workstations would do a much
- better job. That's the reason I put up patriot. It is by far the fastest
- and least loaded irc server in this area, and I invite requests for links from
- other (genuine) servers. Patriot is a VAX9000/420 supercomputer
- and is not likely to have any trouble with multiple server links, so if you
- want to load it with some heavy traffic, that's fine with me. There is one
- catch: The machine itself may be removed some time in the future (about when
- charon is upgraded? hehe :)) but why not use it while it's there? (It is open-
- client too, why don't you check it out! :))
-
- >Greg McMullan, among others. Aren't vanity servers fun? Especially the
- >ones brought to us by Gwydion and Belladona.
-
- In case anyone wonders, I personally did all the installing of the ircd on
- patriot. I am the only person with access either to the executable or to the
- ircd.conf, and I intend to keep it that way. The I line is "* *", there are
- no K-lines, no L-lines, and I am not going to release the list of O-lines here,
- but let's just say "It's short."
-
- If there are any followups to this, please Cc: mnystrom@athena.mit.edu
- (if you don't get that, I mean "send me a copy") because I don't usually read
- this newsgroup.
