  16. I'm naturally sympathetic to attempts to improve the conditions of
  17. scholars, in particular part time faculty. I just get uneasy when it
  18. seems to be done piecemeal.

  20. Here are some questions and comments that come immediately to mind:

  22. (1) Is it being asserted that everything is basically ok and all that needs
  23.     to be done is to implement the specific improvements recommended
  24.     by the AAUP, and that everything else can be left the way it is?
  25.  
  26. (2) Is there any attempt to address the practice of defining
  27.     work to be part time if it is done by a part time employee and full
  28.     time if done by a full time employee, even if it is the same work?
  29.     When I taught at Brandeis, 2 courses per semester was full time work
  30.     and in 1981-2 (my last year there) earned me $20,000, the most I have ever
  31.     earned in my life and which was considered low by the standards of
  32.     other universities) whereas a friend of mine teaching two huge lecture
  33.     courses per semester in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1992 is considered
  34.     part time and earns $7000 per annum.

  36. (3) What about the issue which concerns all scholars working at universities,
  37.     including part timers, namely that of job security? Assure people that if
  38.     they do their jobs, they can keep them. This applies to part timers as
  39.     well as to replacement leave 1 year or 1 semester jobs and to so-called
  40.     tenure track jobs (which assume one has nothing better to do with
  41.     6 years than invest it in a tenure decision and that one has an 
  42.     inexhaustible supply of 6 year intervals to invest in one place after
  43.     another).

  45. (4) I can't help feeling that reduction of the part time work force to %15
  46.     will mean simply firing a lot of part time workers and increasing the
  47.     work load for the rest and for the full time workers. What are the people
  48.     who get fired supposed to do?
