  19. they have some sort of RIGHT to access USENET/NSFNET/etc from their 
  20. college machines.

  22. Look buster, those machines cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and
  23. are not like the library. They are there for specific research. Most
  24. often this is:
  25.    o - For research funded by a grant (a grant may be paying for
  26.        the equipment).
  27.    o - for other research
  28.    o - For classwork
  29.    o - For e-mail and news related to the above
  30.  
  31. Now, its ENTIRLY up to your school if they want to let you read/post news
  32. on those machines or if they let you FTP and play MUD. You HAVE NO
  33. INTRINSIC RIGHT TO IT!!!

  35. Don't think that I'm some sort of authoritarian who thinks that the
  36. administration is getting a rough deal - I'm not. I've fought my
  37. battles with the Wayne State C&IT but that was over due process and 
  38. over their contractual obligation to provide access to their systems.
  39. (They have a policy giving students access).

  41. Now - you can send a letter to your university asking them nicely
  42. if they could do this for you (and the other students), but thats
  43. it.

  45. Now, if part of the student rights policy states that you are entitled
  46. to certain things or if certain privileges are available to other
  47. students in general (ie: the entire student body and not just some
  48. taking a certain class, etc), then your school is breaching the 
  49. contract that it has with you and you have a legal issue to take up
  50. with them.

  52. In general, if it isn't explicitly stated in the contract that you
  53. have with the school, and if they don't generally give full net 
  54. access to just anyone, then YOU HAVE NO RIGHT to it.
