- Remember the relative ranges of the two gun systems. The BB
- can fire effectively from outside the range of most of the
- world's coastal artillery. An Iowa can fire the lighter 750 kg
- shells 27 miles. And a BB is a bear at counter battery fire.
- That's what she was primarily designed to do, take out another
- battleship. The kind of coast guns that could reach a BB
- would be fixed prime targets on any fire mission and wouldn't
- last long enough to be much of a threat.
-
- Also remember that the fire control computers on Iowas are
- still mechanical analog computers. Even if you got her radars,
- she can still fire accurately from known positions or using
- optical rangefinders or even forward observers. These ships
- were designed to take a lot of punishment and keep on fighting.
