  21. Why? The purpose of counterbattery fire is to silence the other party's
  22. indirect fire assets, either by destroying personnel and materiel or
  23. otherwise convincing them that there are safer things to do than continue
  24. their firing. In a nutshell, you point out in a direct way that his
  25. artillery fire will be more costly to him than to you. In that respect
  26. 16" salvos are an ideal counterbattery weapon in that the opposing 
  27. artillery gets the point real fast whether they're on target or not.
  28. Additionally the BB is out of range of most of the artillery being
  29. suppressed and is relatively immune to those systems that can reach.

  31. Similarly in Desert Storm, the MLRS rockets fired in a counterbattery
  32. role may have had a greater cost than the materiel they were used
  33. against, but one dose of "steel rain" was usually all it took.....
