- Allied aircraft attack Axis columns retreating from El Alamein. German
- and Italian aircraft are unable to counter, grounded for lack of fuel or
- because of damaged runways. The Axis troops suffer great losses of men and
- equipment.
-
- Montgomery's X Corps reaches open ground to attack the Axis rear guards,
- capturing the Afrika Korps commander, General von Thoma, and inflicting
- heavy casualties on the 90th Light Division and the Italian Ariete
- division. Hours after it has been given, Hitler finally authorizes
- Rommel's retreat order.
-
- In all, the battle of El Alamein has cost Germany and Italy 25,000 men
- killed or wounded and 30,000 taken prisoner, mostly Italians. In addition,
- 320 tanks, over 1000 guns, and 84 aircraft have been lost. The Allied
- forces have lost 13,500 men including prisoners, 500 tanks, 110 guns, and
- 97 planes.
-
- American soldiers land at Aola, Guadalcanal, 25 miles from the main Marine
- line. Construction troops are included so that an airfield can be built.
-
- A British Merchant Seaman is hanged after being convicted under the 1940
- Treachery Act. The sailor had admitted taking 18 pounds from a Nazi agent
- in Portugal.

- warfare. Their strategy has been good. They pick a soft spot and work it
