  13. BR announced yesterday that they intend to make 5,000 of their staff
  14. redundant by the end of this year.  They have also announced that the
  15. operation of parts of the network may be suspended for safety reasons
  16. because of a shortage of funds, particularly to replace obsolete
  17. signals.
