- Last Thursday, after pulling one too many all nighters, I and two friends left
- Stanford for Big Sur. This was the first big expedition of my VW camper bus
- since rebuilding the carburetors with a guitar string (see rec.autos.vw); and
- we stopped to hike along the way, so we arrived pretty late at the park. We
- ended up just parking and sleeping in the bus.
-
- After the requisite hike through the park in the morning, we followed the
- directions at the lodge, about 3/4 mile S from the park entrance on hwy 1, to
- the first (well, second) turnoff to the right. [The first turn is someone's
- driveway, with an electronic gate.]
-
- The beach is about another 3/4 mile down a twisty, one lane road with
- turnouts -- a bit of an adventure. But it's well worth the trip.
-
- The part of the beach we saw was divided into two large coves, with a
- sanstone outcropping below the high-tide mark, forming a promontory between
- them. Islands with beautiful, sunlit channels through them were just offshore.
- The water was very clear, and blue-green. Amazingly for November, the water
- temperature was about 68F -- just right! The first cove is the mouth of the
- Big Sur river, and very populous. We headed to the right, behind the
- promontory, to find a more secluded spot.
-
- At first, I was disappointed to find lots of (well, OK, ~10 - 20) people
- there, all of whom were clothed. But we set up our stuff and took off our
- clothes anyway. I went out in the water to bodysurf -- the waves were
- beautiful, and coming in as regular as clockwork in four minute sets.
-
- The main island was about 100 yards offshore; I swam out to it, and almost
- climbed up on it, but chickened out when the next set started coming in.
-
- When I finally came back on the beach, I was happily surprised to see that
- most of the people on the beach were nude; I guess they'd been waiting
- for a cue that it was OK, or maybe we scared off all the squares :-).
-
- At sunset, we walked back to the car. My two companions got dressed, but
- I didn't. Why get sand in my clothes? No-one commented on the way back,
- not even the ranger in the parking lot.
-
- In short, a wonderful trip was had by all (and especially me); I heartily
- recommend the place for us fellow freaks!
