- I just got back from the Quad-S (Society for the Scientific Study
- of Sex) Conference in San Diego, where one of the lecture topics was
- nudism across different cultures. They had had a last-minute
- cancellation, and so invited Andrew Martinez (aka The Naked Guy) to give a
- talk. He made a very rational and convincing case for public nudism. He
- talked about his own public nudity as a protest against various social
- forces, including the capitalist tendency to create need in people (such
- as the need to buy the latest fashionable clothes), the European cultural
- imperialism that tells people the naked body is offensive and should be
- covered up at all times, and the myth of hypermasculinity in black men --
- as close as I can remember, his quote was, "I can combat the stereotype of
- black men as having big dicks and being super-masculine, since I don't
- have a big dick."
- The audience had an almost unanimously positive reaction to his
- talk; I just wish the general population (or at least the administrative
- farts at Berkeley) were as open-minded.
