- Hi, Diana.
-
- The underlining is basted to the fabric and then forgotten; you sew as if
- the underlining were part of the fabric. The fabric you choose for the under
- lining depends on what kind of fabric the dress is made of. You might choose
- a regular lining fabric. The key is to choose a fabric with good body if
- your fashion fabric is loosely woven or slinky.
-
- As to why the pattern calls for underlining, you already touched on that
- yourself--the pattern is for a wedding gown. White satin, while not
- particularly thin or unstable, is often practically transparent. If your
- fabric is stable and not a light color, and you like the way
- it feels with just one layer of the lining fabric backing it up, then
- you can just ignore the underlining.
-
- If you choose to underline the dress, go to a fabric store with a swatch
- of your fashion fabric and try it with several types of fabric; put the
- fabrics together and bend them, let them drape, etc.. This will help
- you choose the right fabric to give the effect you want.
-
- By the way, a great effect can be had by underlining a white wedding
- gown with a pastel. The result is just the slightest hint of color --
- fantastic if you look horrible in white!
-
- Happy sewing!
