- You may want to check with your bank on this but it's my understanding that if
- you put the money in the child's name they get it at some point (certain age?)
- regardless of what you have to say about it. So if the child (God forbid) turns
- out to be some drug-dealing loser, you can't keep the money from them. Or if
- they decide not to go to college, you may not have a say in what the money is
- spent on.

- Also, I've heard that it's better to put the college savings into paying off
- your house (if you have one) rather than into savings since the equity in your
- house doesn't show up in financial aid calculations but savings does. And you
- can then borrow against the equity in your house to pay for college. We haven't
- tried this but just heard that it's a better option.
