- I've seen this usually in old units, and it's caused by settling. You
- say yours is built of brick. If that means it's the conventional design,
- the entire unit weighs several tons and requires skilled foundation
- work to prevent settling. It sounds like either your contractor wasn't
- very skilled, or there's some poorly packed underground fill he didn't
- know about. If it's a conventional design, it will almost certainly have
- to be demolished and replaced after the foundation is redone properly.

- If it's a more modern design, the brickwork is merely a shell around
- the insert (which is the real fireplace). In this case, it may be
- possible for a skilled mason to shore it up underneath and replace
- the mortar around the crack.
