- Even cleaning out the fireplace may not help -- here's why:

- Anytime your furnace or hot water heater or other induced drafted appliance
- kicks on it will lower the pressure in you house slightly. If the flue is open
- or leaky it may be the route of lowest flow resistance to equalize the pressure.
- If air is drawn down your idle flue after a fire it will smell like creosote
- or whatever. If you crack a window in the basement near your furnace the air
- will leak thru from there and the smell should disappear.
