- I was just reading through some sun intro mail, and it appears that if
- you are currently using Solaris 2.1, you can't use a SparcPrinter or
- the new NewsPrint 20 printer. The OS doesn't support the SBus cards.
- You can print to them as REMOTE printers only..which is fine for people
- with networks... But I was thinking of buying a Sparcstation LX for my
- personal use. If I do that, I can't attach a SparcPrinter to it. Which
- means I'd have to buy an SBus parallel card, and attach a regular printer
- to it.. which will probably cost me more than a SparcPrinter would have
- cost under educational discount.
-
- It seems to me that Sun has decided to ignore anything other than it's new
- target market (Large MIS departments), and is adopting strategies that will
- actually put-off and DISCOURAGE purchases by smaller users. If the two
- new low-cost machines can't be used to print to their standard printers
- when they're standalone machines.. then it must be that Sun released them
- not to compete with the PERSONAL computer market, but with the portion of
- the PC market that is being used in business LANS.
-
- I suppose that's valid. But it means a lot of the current discussions
- about Sun comming down to the little people aren't true. For the little
- people, it seems Sun may eventually have products that *Can* support you,
- but you're going to have to go through a teeth pulling, extra expense
- process to get a workable machine. And it's disturbing that Sun would
- willingly shoot it's own customers in the feet...and hands...and..
-
- (but then, in my opinion, IBM and Microsoft have been doing that for years,
- and look how well they're doing...)
