- I used to get that occasionally on my unit, I use a 50 mhz 030 and
- a 33 mhz 882, but use a 50 mhz oscillator on both. I have a 2 position SPDT
- switch soldiered onto the FPU ocsillator selector and keep a 40 mhz
- oscillator in the FPU socket for safety, if I fear problems I boot with the
- FPU using the 40 mhz oscillator.
- But back to the yellow screen, for me it had nothing to do with the
- oscillators, but loose chips. The problem was solved by taking everything
- apart and just firmly pressing all the chips back in place and making sure
- all the socketed parts were firmly in place, voila things worked again.
- Also check your FPU oscillator, you may have it in wrong or one of
- the pins is not in place. I would also suggest you put a switch on the FPU
- selector so you don't have to manually switch things all the time, which
- means taking the case off everytime you want to.
- Remember you have aproximately a 25% safety margin in clock speeds
- so to use your FPU at 25 is usually OK, if your lucky you may end up with a
- FPU that can handle better, as the 33 mhz unit I got does 50 nicely for
- most things. The biggest problms for me are those that do a lot of
- accessing to the harddrives, I think it's the DMA access that is to fault
- here, because for things that don't access the drives a lot I don't have
- problems at 50 mhz, but do a lot a drive accessing and things go down. I'd
- turn off DMA totally if I knew how, but that's another problem.
