  26.                     JOINT PARALLELIZATION EFFORT

  29. MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- November 17, 1992 -- Digital Equipment 
  30. Corporation and Gaussian, Inc. have begun a joint development effort 
  31. to adapt Gaussian 92 software to Digital's DECmpp 12000 series of 
  32. massively parallel computers. Gaussian 92 is one of the industry's 
  33. leading computational chemistry application programs.

  35.      Michael Frisch, president of Gaussian said "I initially worked 
  36. on the Gaussian programs at Carnegie-Mellon University, using the 
  37. very first VAX-11/780, which is now in the Boston Computer Museum.  
  38. Fifteen years later, I am very pleased to participate in this joint 
  39. project, which reflects Digital's continuing strong commitment to 
  40. computational chemistry and support for the Gaussian programs".

  42.      Gaussian is the market leader in electronic structure software.
  43. Electronic structure is a distinct type of computational chemistry 
  44. that uses basic laws of quantum mechanics to model and analyze the 
  45. structure and properties of molecular principles.  It is used widely 
  46. throughout the chemical and pharmaceutical industries for drug 
  47. design, environmental chemistry and basic manufacturing.

  49.      "Gaussian software has run on Digital's VAX computers for 
  50. years," said Bill Desimone, marketing manager for Digital's 
  51. Molecular Sciences Applications group.  "Running this software on 
  52. massively parallel computers is a logical and an important next step 
  53. for Digital and for many of its customers."

  55.      "Massively parallel architectures present the next challenge 
  56. for computational chemists because they offer the hope of 
  57. dramatically reduced time-to-solution for the large problems 
  58. chemists are interested in" said Frisch.

  60.      Digital's DECmpp 12000 Series computers range from 1,024- to
  61. 16,384-processor models, and are capable of performing up to 300
  62. million floating-point operations per second (MFLOPS.)  They are
  63. used in applications such as database search, computational
  64. chemistry, automobile design, statistical and financial analysis,
  65. text retrieval, as well as signal, image and seismic processing.
