- DIGITAL EQUIPMENT AND GAUSSIAN, INC. ANNOUNCE
- JOINT PARALLELIZATION EFFORT
-
-
- MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- November 17, 1992 -- Digital Equipment
- Corporation and Gaussian, Inc. have begun a joint development effort
- to adapt Gaussian 92 software to Digital's DECmpp 12000 series of
- massively parallel computers. Gaussian 92 is one of the industry's
- leading computational chemistry application programs.
-
- Michael Frisch, president of Gaussian said "I initially worked
- on the Gaussian programs at Carnegie-Mellon University, using the
- very first VAX-11/780, which is now in the Boston Computer Museum.
- Fifteen years later, I am very pleased to participate in this joint
- project, which reflects Digital's continuing strong commitment to
- computational chemistry and support for the Gaussian programs".
-
- Gaussian is the market leader in electronic structure software.
- Electronic structure is a distinct type of computational chemistry
- that uses basic laws of quantum mechanics to model and analyze the
- structure and properties of molecular principles. It is used widely
- throughout the chemical and pharmaceutical industries for drug
- design, environmental chemistry and basic manufacturing.
-
- "Gaussian software has run on Digital's VAX computers for
- years," said Bill Desimone, marketing manager for Digital's
- Molecular Sciences Applications group. "Running this software on
- massively parallel computers is a logical and an important next step
- for Digital and for many of its customers."
-
- "Massively parallel architectures present the next challenge
- for computational chemists because they offer the hope of
- dramatically reduced time-to-solution for the large problems
- chemists are interested in" said Frisch.
-
- Digital's DECmpp 12000 Series computers range from 1,024- to
- 16,384-processor models, and are capable of performing up to 300
- million floating-point operations per second (MFLOPS.) They are
- used in applications such as database search, computational
- chemistry, automobile design, statistical and financial analysis,
- text retrieval, as well as signal, image and seismic processing.
-
- Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard,
- Massachusetts, is the leading worldwide supplier of networked
- computer systems, software and services. Digital pioneered and
- leads the industry in interactive, distributed and multivendor
- computing. Digital and its business partners deliver the power to
- use the best integrated solutions - from desktop to data center -
- in open information environments.
