- WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY USES DIGITAL'S VXT 2000
- X WINDOW TERMINALS TO TEACH MATHEMATICAL MODELING
-
-
- PULLMAN, WA -- NOVEMBER 2, 1992 -- The Mathematics Department of
- Washington State University handles approximately 1000 students each
- semester on their computer system with only 30 of Digital's VXT 2000
- X Window Terminals. The graduate and undergraduate students perform
- sophisticated mathematical modeling, generate and analyze computer
- graphics, and solve problems in various higher mathematics courses.
-
- "Our computer system using Digital's X Window terminals enables
- our mathematics students to gain familiarity with X Windows, use the
- Mathematica application, and work on problems of immediate
- relevance," said Professor Michael Moody, who administers the
- mathematics lab. "The response time, friendly user interface, and
- easy access to applications software have convinced us that these X
- Window terminals are the best alternative to meet our requirements."
-
- The department supports graduate and undergraduate mathematics
- students studying calculus, differential equations, graph theory,
- number theory, and numerical mathematics. Using the Mathematica
- application, students model, for example, cancer tumor growth, solve
- optimization problems, explore dynamic systems, solve eigenvalue
- problems, model ancient Japanese swords, and write computer programs.
-
- The mathematics lab is open 85 hours per week including week-
- ends. Up to 300 students per class in three different mathematics
- classes tackle some nine assignments each semester using the lab's
- computer systems. The lab handles about 1000 computer accounts each
- semester, and at most times students gain immediate access to a
- terminal.
-
- The 30 15-inch monochrome VXT 2000 X Window Terminals are booted
- from an InfoServer 150VXT server running from four DECsystem 5000
- systems. Hardcopy is handled by Digital's PrintServer 20 network
- printer.
-
- Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard,
- Massachusetts, is the world's leading supplier of networked
- computer systems, software and services. Digital pioneered and
- leads the industry in interactive, distributed and multivendor
- computing. Digital and its business partners deliver the power
- to use the best integrated solutions - from desktop to data center -
- in open information environments.
