- Update on the Austin City Council's hearing on the Barton Creek Sewer:
- On 11/12/92 around 200 people signed up to speak about the sewer. Although
- the council's agenda for the day was light, they managed to fritter away
- a lot of time before the public hearings at five, so by the end of the
- meeting (~10pm) only the first 16 people signed up had spoken. The council
- decided to continue the meeting this Thursday (11/19), probably at 5:00 pm.
- They also decided to allow more speakers to sign-up from 5:00-5:15 pm.
- I urge interested parties to take advantage of this opportunity, and most
- importantly, if you signed up last week please attend to address the council.
- All of the times listed here are subject to change; I suggest you call the
- clerk (Arlene Ablanedo at 499-2210) to confirm them.
-
- Below is my original posting from last week regarding this issue.

-
- On Thursday, Nov. 12 at 6:45 PM the Austin City Council will vote on the
- proposal to fund the South Austin Outfall Phase 2 (AKA the Barton Springs
- Sewer). The proposed sewer is 48 inches (FOUR FEET) wide, will have a
- the capacity to carry 17 MILLION gallons of raw sewerage a day, and will
- cross Barton Creek just 60 feet from Barton Springs Pool. The initial
- costs of the project will be $3 million dollars with final projected
- costs of $25 million. The public voted down the sewer in 1975 and this
- public project has not been included in any bond proposals since then.
-
- The sewer will serve not South Austin but West Austin and other areas
- outside of the city limits and within the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer
- recharge zone (the same critical areas addressed by the SOS ordinance).
- Projected need for the sewer is based on old projections which do not
- take into account new restrictions on development density as required
- by the SOS voters' initiative.
-
- This week the Austin Parks Board unanimously rejected the proposal and urged
- the city council to reconsider the proposal.
-
- Having heard the wishes of the voters on August 8th in the SOS referendum
- the council is bent on ignoring them and moving in the opposite direction
- by building the infrastructure required to support thousands of new
- residences in this fragile and controversial area.
-
- How can the citizens of Austin keep the council from building this huge
- threat to the Springs? COME TO THE CITY COUNCIL AND SIGN UP TO SPEAK AGAINST
- THE PROJECT! Even if you do not speak, by signing up against the proposal
- your opposition makes a difference as the signup numbers are entered into
- the public record.
-
- City Council is located at 2nd and Lavaca (downtown). YOU MUST SIGN UP BEFORE
- THE HEARING TIME (6:45 pm) IN ORDER TO ADDRESS THE COUNCIL.
