I just saw Dracula last night and must admit being pretty disappointed with the whole thing. Didn't strike me as taking any sort of a stand on anything, and rather stayed on the fence of horror/comedy/love story. The horror was downright dull (the only scare I saw in the whole movie was near the end when Drac was with Mina in the asylum and the good (?) guys came barging in...).
The love story bit was rather strained, and I think a lot more develpoment could have been done between Drac and Mina (she seemed to be just a little too dumb to be a school teacher... reminisent of the period perhaps...).
The humour aspect was amusing in parts, but I would have prefered a more intense Van Helsing rather than the humorous fool he seemed to be...
Anyhow, did anyone else feel a little confused in the end? Perhaps I read a bit too much into things, but I got the oddest impression that the vampirism which affected Drac was actually a gift from god so he could be reunited with Mina (well whatever her name was in her pervious life...). I recall the scene where Vlad grew angry at his wife's death and demanded "Is this how god reweards me for protecting his church?". Then he becomes a vampire... In the end, it seemed like god took him back (the pai
nting on the ceiling in his castle made it looke like Drac was an angel...). Could god have made Drac a vampire to make up for taking his wife, just so he could see his wife again in a later life? (if all this sounds confusing don't worry, I tend to babble...).
Did anyone else see any significance in the death of Lucy? I thought it was kind of funny that she died as Mina married Harker... Lucy's blood flowed in the bedroom about the same time Mina and Harker would have been consumating their marriage... (I'd kill to ask FFC if there was some hidden relevance there...)
