  40. Humpty says that a word means what *he* says it means.  (Gabe, who
  41. doesn't accept the information in dictionaries as useful for determining
  42. what a word means, works a lot like this.  Or at least he's never given
  43. any other reason than his own say-so.)

  45. I say that a word means what LOTS OF PEOPLE say it means -- namely those
  46. who use it.  I say that there is no other standard for determining meaning
  47. of words.

  49. And I would love to hear of any other standard, any other way aside
  50. from actual usage, of determining what a word means.
