- :
- : I guess my questions are something like this:
- :
- : What is the difference between leaded and unleaded fuel, and
- : what purpose does (did) the lead serve?
- :
- As I understand, the lead serves to keep the valves from spot-welding themselves
- to the valve seats, thereby ablating the surface, causing the seats to erode &
- the valves to recede into the head. Recession is always painful. This causes
- your valve clearance to decrease, which could cause them to not close fully,
- which makes the seats erode faster, etc etc.
-
- I understand that lead has some lubricating properties, as well, but I don't
- know for sure. Anybody?
-
- : Does my engine care whether or not the lead is there?
- :
- It depends on how you drive. If you are kind&gentile to the engine, it probably
- doesn't matter. If you drive the Spider like it should be driven (with vigor
- and enthusiasm), it's probably going to hurt it.
-
- : If I need to use a lead additive, which brand is good, or
- : what specifically should I look for?
- :
- This might not be an option for you, but the best thing would be to install
- hardened valve seats. This involves, obviously, pulling the heads, & new seats
- and probably valves. I use additives in some of my cars which I don't use
- enough to justify the expense of converting the heads on, but I can't remember
- whose additive I use...it's one of those 1 ounce/gallon types, with the
- squeeze-bottle and built in measuring device, if that helps. I really can't
- tell you how effective it is, except that I haven't noticed problems in those
- engines.
