- In an 1920's auto book my grandfather had...To remove carbon
- from the cylinders it said to remove the spark plugs and
- pour in a measure (tablespoon?) of kerosene. disconnect the
- coil and turn over briefly. let sit over night.
-
- supposed to loosen and soften the carbon, which gets blown
- out on start-up.

-
- when in high school a friend a I tried the pouring a
- mix of denatured alcohol and water right into the intake
- method of removing carbon. It worked. the engine shuddered
- and we revved to keep running. ended up with a 2 ft
- "puddle" of powdered black carbon on the driveway beneath
- the end of the exhaust pipe. (it did run better/smoother/etc)
- ( 400 cu. v-8 )
-
- somehow the idea of major engine damage never occured to us.
